Depends. Many are quite safe but it some places they overload regularly. I always make sure I find where the life-jackets are stored and sit/stand near them. Make a mental note of where the life-boats are as well, and stay on the top deck where you can get out quickly.

A lucky Rabbits foot. Those are some scary ferry's dude, and some of the least safe in the whole word. Some of the practices you will find hard to believe. A bit of advice, when the crew start to put on life jackets, Panic!

I would go to your local swimming pool and practise treading water.....make sure you have a life jacket might be worth buying your own.
