For myself I love racing. It doesn't have to be NASCAR but I think where NASCAR gets the people to watch is, it is on 10 months of the year.
They ( the cup series ) have very few driver any more, they have turned them into stars. Sure they still drive but this isn't how NASCAR is marketing their product. Not to bad of an idea as long as they can suck the mindless in, using this strategy.
I guess look on here at this Q&A forum. I would say you have 80% of the Q about one driver or another. Who's better, is he the best ever, why don't you like my driver. This stuff gets peoples blood moving. It's something that they can rant and rave about on Monday then by Wednessday you get the rivalry started back up. Just like any sports fan and that is what NA$CAR wanted.
I was a fan from almost the beginning. My first Grand National race was in 67. Been watching racing since the 50's. Raceing is my favorite sport to watch, has been and always will. But NASCAR is just part of it. They had me locked in to there show until they started growing and changing so many of the rules that it make you wonder if you are watching a race or a fixed NBA game.
I doubt if they ever will come back to there right minds. For now this is still working with there weird rule changing and dreamt up backyard buddy rules that you make up as you play. The thing that is a wrong with that is they have been around for so long all they needed to do was fix some things not drop the old and bring in the new. The old wasn't broke.
But this is what they did. They dropped the TV stations that carried there sport for years and years for a very big 6 billion dollar TV deal and then that is when the changes started. The dollar thing I can't blame them for that but they didn't have to change the sport and turn it into a circus.
Along with some of the changes they stared building these tracks that all looked the same. They were building 150,000 seats and putting a track in front of them in big sponsor or market areas. These are called cookie cutters. The ironic thing about these tracks there are a lot of them that look like Michigans track and it has to be one of the boringest tracks to watch a race. Then they stared pullng races from the towns and family owned race tracks in the southeast to these big market areas.
This is when I stopped watching a whole lot of NA$CAR and only watch the old tracks from yesterday that have some charactor.
So it's long winded but this as a old fan not so much new fan sees it and that is that.
And to be perfactly honest with you Dale Sr getting killed didn't help any for me. If you look back at the death of Sr. you will see so to follow the rules being changed one at a time until it is a farce.
This was once my favorite and now it is a sore subject for me. Now I buy nothing with NA$CAR on it.
Spell check stopped so I better too.

There are on aveerage 265 stations on most satillite or cable compamies menu. But people that are not race fans stop on the race and then complain about it.
NASCAR is a Motorsport that draws thousands of fans to tracks all over the United States.
The fans watch 43 cars of various makes race from 300 to 600 miles with 500 being the average. The fans range from young teens that pick a driver based on his sponsor to old time fans(as myself with 40 years of being a fan) that watch the drivers that remind us of the barnstorming/ironman drivers we grew up watching.
There are drivers that are fan favorites because they come along at a time we needed a new hero or thatere are the drivers that are popular with the younger females because of their looks. There are the fans of drivers that drive a certain make car or have a certain sponsore.
But for a real race fan it is seeing the GREAT AMERICAN HEROS battle each othe for a win,a trophy and come back next week to do it again.

good question...I'm not a fan at all, but for some reason, when I'm switching channels b/t football, golf, baseball, etc., there's something about NASCAR that I find entertaining. I like to drive fast so maybe that's it. Maybe I'm subconsciously looking for a crash to satiate my hunger for violence in the few seconds away from the NFL. Kinda like watching ice-skating although I'm consciously looking for falls. I can't imagine actually being at a raceway b/c I can feel the nausea of watching cars going 200mph in circles just thinking about it. Not to mention how loud it must be. I really don't see much competition involved personally. All the cars pretty much run the same. There are obviously some nuances that cause one driver's car to run out of gas faster than the other or ones tires to run down b4 his/her opponents but these are never obvious to the audience. What makes it enjoyable has to be the in-depth camera coverage and audio we gets from the networks. Listening to the pit crew talking to the drivers is pretty entertaining as is the view from the driver's seat. But I'm not a fan, just a casual glancer. What do I know?

For myself, I watch it because I'm in a Nascar Fantasy League, and it adds to the excitement, by having certain drivers to root for. Imagining doing 190MPH while touching the bumper to the car in front of you, and being pushed from behind by a driver on your bumper, would have to get the adrenalin going.

It's wrestling on wheels.....All other forms of racing don't allow for much contact between the cars...else, they'd ALL go flying off the track. NASCAR racing allows for lots of contact between the cars, and in some instances like drafting, they actually *encourage* it.
And of course, on the bigger tracks...Let's call a spade a spade...Not everyone will admit it, but everyone likes to see a big wreck...so long as nobody gets hurt. Nascar wrecks are sure fun to watch!!

Some people like it for the wrecks, some for the racing, and some for the personalities that the drivers have, as well as some more reasons.

The intensity. The complexity. Fans rooting for their favorite driver(s). The crashes.
If you don't like it, don't watch it. But don't come here and bash it, either.
