I never knew arms and the torso was so important to running, but someone told me it was.

Also they say hamstrings are important, yet i dont feel its effects. Its always the quads that burn the next morning after a race.

Yes, your hamstrings are important when it comes to running sprints. If you've ever watch Olympic trials, college meets or professional sprinters, you might notice that they run on their toes. Planting a flat-footed stride is immediate suicide for a sprinter if he wants to clock a good time. The hammies must be strong in order quickly land on the toes (or at least the ball of the foot and everything head of that) and propel the body forward.
Other important muscles include the glutes, the chest, the quads, the calves, and the abs.

Quads, calvses, pretty much the whole body. The hamstrings actually get neglected. Running works everything except for your hamstrings. That and a runners extremely strong quads and a lack of proper stretching often leads runners to hamstring injuries. Look at Vince Young.

quads, hamstrings, gluteals.... are the main muscle groups.
hamstrings are needed in hip extension which works with gravity eliminated half way when you sprint... which means less work for that muscle group... whereas your quads fully go against gravity and provide hip flexion and most of the power in your run.
