i would say get the flash if you know flash, i suspect not so then get the lens, others will have their own handle on it

Only you can answer this question because only you know how you will be using your camera. If your main use is outdoors for scenics or sports or urban landscapes where a flash isn't needed - buy the lens. If you plan on a lot of indoor photography where a flash will be needed then buy the flash.

I am a believer in buying the top of the line flash offered by Nikon (or any manufacturer) for your camera. In my many years of experience I've found its always better to have a feature and not need it than to need it and not have it.

actually you have it the other way round. In my opinion, flashguns (as with most electronic products) tend to fall in price much faster compared to good glass.

if you must, go for the sb-600 (if u want to stay with nikon) or consider the sigma ef500 super dg st (which is what i use) comparable with the sb-800 in GN at 1/3 the cost.

good glass (esp "pro" lenses tend to keep their value for much longer. case in point, my friend just sold his 2 year old nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 still retaining 90% of its orginial value.

however, since you are using the D40, you are pretty much limited to DX (nikon) lenses. The Nikon 18-200mm VR is amazing. I have one and its what I use for 80-90% of my shots.

VR allows you to shoot hand-held at 4 stops faster than otherwise. Flash gives you additional light. Both can have its own effect on an image but it all depends on what kind of look you are looking for. Similarly, both VR and flash have their own limitations depending on the condiitons you are shooting in.

The sb-600 cannot fire remotely but the sb-800 (and sigma equivalent) can.

Hope this helps.

It depends on what do you shoot. If you shoot weddings go for the flash. If you shoot sports go for the lens. If you are more for indoor, go with the flash. If not go with the lens. It will benefit. And also, try to get a lens with low aperture around f/2.8. Its considered seriously good. It can shoot for low light and benefit outdoors and allows you to have faster shutter speed. So, i advice you to go for the lens. But if you know your gonna shoot weddings, go for the flash.

I actually have a d60 so i might have the skill that can assist you you. that's what i do for my digital camera: i circulate into shutter precedence(it relatively is the S on the dial, between P,A, and M. i then turn my command dial to a super quickly putting, permit's say a million/4000 of a 2d. thats what you're able to do in case you desire it extremely sparkling. in case you desire to possibly blur somebody's legs to make it appear like their working quickly, basically turn down the shutter velocity by utilising turning the dial
