Fundamental Christians-Why do some of you try to smash people over the head with the Bible instead of loving someone as was asked of us and letting them believe in their own time?

Atheist-Why do some of you try to squelch the belief of Christians with "proof" when proof isn't necessary for belief, just faith?

Pardon me, *atheists

That's why I said the word "some" for both cases.

Certainly not all Christians are fundamentalists, I'm proof of that and the same is true for Atheists.

Well, as a christian, I can definately vouch for having done that to people- that is ramming the bible down some throats-- in my early days. Many christians, unfortunately, go through this phase. I certainly meant well, wanting others to see what I could see, feel what I was feeling, and to have that relationship with God that I knew I finall had found.

I still do- certainly! But... I have learned over the years that you cannot force someone to see or believe something unless they are ready. I can still share my faith, but in a respectful way. Younger christians have not yet learned this. I cringe when I see other well-meaning christians force-feeding others, but just like I couldn't see it back then, neither can they... They do mean well, they just have not yet learned how to handle the truth they have discovered.

To answer your question in one word, immaturity...

I see no reason to give "faith" some get-out-of-questioning-free card just because it might upset other people.

There is very little "proof" for anything. Proof only counts in math and alcohol.

I not only have a right to speak my mind, it is part of my moral code to do so in order to try to better the world around me.

Christians speak for the same reason (usually), and they have just as much right to do so.

People dicussing and disagreeing is not a bad thing, hon. I don't mind Christians or other theists preaching so long as they don't do it when their opinions are uninvited or unwanted, and so long as they do not try to repress the right of others to voice differing opinions and viewpoints.

In a forum such as this, no one should come here expecting to hear what they want to hear all of the time, or even most of the time. However, if getting along with others is your own personal intention, you may want to exclude from your vernacular phrases which suggest that those who don't agree with you are "swine".

When someone willingly comes into a public forum like this and asks a direct question related to R&S, how can I possibly be accused of "smashing people over the head with the Bible"?

I will never meet these people. How better to show them my love for them than by sharing the Word of God?

Hmmmm?????

The phrase cast your pearls before swine is typical emotionally loaded rhetoric. Translated it says that whatever I say is a gem of wisdom and if you reject it for whatever reason it proves not that what I say is rubbish but that you are a cretin.

Faith without proof is demonstrably dangerous and completely irrational. If that faith was - say - that a race was worthless and should be eradicated by eugenics you would not think this was good, and you would not think that it should not be resisted. Yet this happened. As did the religious justification of slavery (at least the church apologised for that one recently., albeit 400 years late!)

Lets face it, if we do not test things with our reason then we are no better than beasts of the field, and if we do then we find religion lacking.

"fundies" can't seem to help themselves - like Prez Bush suggesting that the Jews and Muslims sit down and talk things out like good Christians -- they don't mean any harm, they just can't understand that someone else might like their family religion as much as Christians like theirs.

athiests also can't help themselves - with so many fundies on the attack, inadvertant as it may be, the athiests feel threatened.

As I see it, we can either all ignore each other, or we can just agree to disagree and let each follow their path in peace. One guy started a great church, the Church of Enthusiasm & Joy. I don't know what they taught, but I like to believe it was all about love and peace and appreciating our differences. Sounds like a plan to me.

Not all athiests are fundamentalists. Some of us are curious to understand why christians - and other religions - think like they do.

Smash huh?

I believe in the sovereignty of God. He saves whom He saves, and He hardens whom He hardens.

I love Romans 9.

Once a person has been given eternal life, they can never be snatched out of the hand of the Father. Thank you Lord!

Don't worry, be faithful!

I might answer a swine's question in order to provide those who might not be swine an answer to the question. Jesus, Paul, Peter, and others had mockers in the crowd. But even though my answer is under that question, it is for those who might be looking for God.

i don't. I try to love people, but if they ask I explain it as I believe it which some misconstrue as being forceful.

Jesus, never did this, he chastised many people for twisting the word of God and making it non effect or powerless. We are supposed to be the salt to preserve his word, if the word is twisted, then we would be preserving that twisted word.
