Combination. I told him basically what I liked (antique Art Deco design like Tacori with a CZ or gemstone) and what size would be OK (nothing over .75 carat, preferably closer to .5)
After that he went shopping all on his own and picked it out. I didn't even know when it was coming it was just us talking about getting married and we'd been discussing what kinds of rings we wanted.
I'm really glad it happened how it did. Left up to his own he was going to pick out a 1ct solitaire diamond. Great for the girl in general but for someone with my job a bad idea.

We dated about 5 years before getting engaged. After about a year or so of dating, we were looking through a magazine together and I saw an engagement ring I wanted. I think I said something about it. My fiance actually went back to the magazine later when I wasn't looking and cut the picture out and kept it in his wallet for 4 years. When he proposed, it was the exactly same one i have been eyeing on for years. Then he told me about the picture from the magazine. So yes, I am glad that it happened that way. I was very surprised when he proposed because I wasn't expecting it. Also, I got the ring that I wanted.

I think practically all guys are totally uninformed and basically ignorant when it comes to diamonds. Women know the type of diamond cut they want, the size and ring style, but they too have no indepth knowledge on diamonds.
Oh...the mall jewelry stores just drool over couples or some poor guy going out to buy an engagement diamond. They'll mark it up at least 300% and actual quality of the diamond will be less than desirable.
Even if you're going to spend, $1,000, $5,000 or more...don't get ripped off, ok? Study up. Here is a good spot to start...pricescope.com.

Half and half. He took me ring shopping and I chose the cut (emerald cut). I didn't know that he actually purchased it a week later. He didn't propose until 5 months later. He actually pretended that he didn't get it for me to throw me off track. Yes I'm very happy it happened this way. For something where he's going to spend a significant amount of money, he wanted to make sure that I loved the ring that he buys. So I got the ring that I loved (I need to love it since I'll be the one wearing it) and he still got to surprise me months later with the proposal and coming out with the actual ring that I love.

He picked out the setting, diamonds, everything on his own & I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised! I can understand why some women want to be involved in the shopping process, but I cannot tell you how it wonderful it feels to know that he spent time searching & researching, keeping it a secret from me, & making sure he chose the perfect one. And he did a great job. I love my ring but more importantly, I love knowing how much of his heart is in that ring.

Yes Im glad!! We picked it out together, and he surprised with the actual engagement. He wouldnt have wanted the responsibility of picking it out by himself, anyway. Im very particular about what I wear. I may get thumbs down for this, but I know what I like. I wouldnt have loved just any old ring. I would still love him of course, but not necessarily the ring. And I love my rings!

I was not surprised. I am very glad that it happened. We have been married 5 weeks now. I mean the way he proposed is plan simple sweet and romantic in my eyes. He told me we had time to waste and so lets go pick out a ring. Plan and simple.

I was shocked, and thrilled! We had talked about engagement rings for a months and I had shown him examples of the types of rings I liked...we never went to a jewelery store together, or anything like that...just if someone showed us theirs, I'd comment to him on what I'd like. The ring I got is the same ring I'd pick myself if I had the choice of every ring in the world.
I couldn't be happier aobut the ring, as well as our surprise engagement.

My finance picked my ring and even after years of hinting I want a bigger stone, my engagement ring will always be the only engagement ring I want. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of the day he proposed. I wouldn't want to pick my ring - it would ruin the surprise and it's nice if he takes the time to pick it or design it himself. It shows he cares and is willing to take time out of his day to do something special for me.

I showed him online just so he would know what I liked when the time came, then the next day we were at the mall and I begged to go in the store just to see what it looked like and he bought it then. He proposed that night while we were going up the mountain on the Gatlinburg Sky Lift! It wasn't a surprise, but I wouldn't have it any other way!
