The geography of Viet Nam had nothing to do with the American war effort. We won every battle we fought. The fights in the deep jungle were difficult but were winnable. What undermined the war was dissatisfaction with the war in the public eyes. And the terrible treatment our military received stateside from our fellow Americans. What really ended the Viet Nam war was not the American fighting men, it was the politicians who bowed to the verbal minority and cut off the money to support the troops. Thus endith the war, thus endith the lesson.

The jungle and geography did not undermine the American War Effort.
It was the anti-war protesters and politicians who undermined the war effort.
The Green Berets / S.F. wanted to implement a policy of "winning the hearts and minds" of the village population who were disconnected from the Vietnamese Government Political system and to counter the influence of the communists, failure by the American Military to adapt to this new type of warfare saw them going down the same road to defeat as the French before them.
The rest as they say is history.
For: cog1233:
How were the US & British able then to defeat the Japanese in the jungles of Burma and in the jungles of North Borneo and the jungles of many Pacific Islands in between??
How were the British able to defeat the Communist terrorists in the Jungles of Malaysia and Sri Lanka??
By your call no one can win in a Jungle environment!!

1.Home turf,in which they have been fighting on for a long time before we arrived there.2.Tunnel systems, which the could hide in during our bombing raids. They also used these to store supplies, and for hospitols.3.Climate.They live there and are well adjusted to the climate, while our guys were shipped directly over without time to acclimate.4.Triple canopy jungle, hard to give air support when you can't see what or who your shooting at,thats why agent orange was used to defoiliate so to give the viet cong less places to hide,so we thought.

Too much dense vegetation for the opposing forces to take cover and move in. Much harder environment to fight unconventional forces.
