there's a guy in brighton who does tattoos by hand, instead of with a machine - by all accounts it's less painful than a machine, and you get a slightly different effect (obviously more dots than the lines of a machine)

obviously, a guy in prison or a sharpened stick in indonesia might be different...

well that guy was probably talking about Hawaiian tattoos.. The use a needle and a stick to tap on the needle to put the ink into your body. It takes forever and it can make the pain more drawn out. Also there is only one needle so filling in the tattoo will take longer..

on a tattoo gun you still have one needle for the outline, but it moves at a blinding speed, so the process takes less time.. The average filler needle set for a tatoo gun has anywhere from 3-9 needles all moving as one to fill the tattoo in, so that process goes really fast.

I have seen tattoos that are done by hand with a guitar string. Same single needle repetative time consuming painful adventure as the tap style.

All in all, every method is going to hurt about equal, it's just the length of time you spend on the table getting said tattoo done..

The "tattoo machine" does have needles, you are correct but the needles move so fast its not as bad, now with a needle it hurts a lot worse because your slowly tearing it through your skin, so its like your taking your time. I'd go with a tattoo machine :)

Tattoo guns are so much nicer and you get a nice clean cut tattoo, needles are the jail house way, and dont look that great. The tattoo gun uses different sized needles and it moves very fast, so its much quicker.

If you like pain and waiting, go with the hammer and needle.
If you like pain, then go with the gun.
