It only takes about a week to a week and a half to walk across it. What did they do, walk in alternating concentric circles?

Other than the obviously glaring problem of no historical or archaeological evidence that this story ever happened.

Wouldn't someone have stood up at some point and said "hey Moses you suck as a leader, I am taking over, I can't get us ant more lost or do any worse than you".

It is also quite interesting that in the comparative religion course I am taking the professors teaching it all believe that the original of the story resulted in Moses being killed by the tribe so he wouldn't be worshipped as a saviour to the people who had already committed idolatry.

It takes a week to walk one way across the desert...
2 weeks to walk there and back .....
4 weeks a month...so two times in a month...
2 times a month x12 months = 24 x 40 years

24x 40 = 960 circles , approximately

You know, I always wondered why it took them 40 years. It must have been the size of Africa. That's all I can figure. You can't take the bible literally. Geography changes over thousands of years. Medical knowledge changes over thousand of years, like when the bible talks about Jesus healing the 'inflicted'. Releasing demons and such. Think about what they knew about illness. For Christ sake, they thought when you sneeze, your soul escapes out your nose.
I'm not denying that Jesus existed or preformed miracles. All I'm saying is that what is written in the bible is not totally a first hand account. Point being--either 40 years is a different interpretation of passing time, or these people were really stupid.

They didn't walk the whole 40 years. They would stop and stay awhile in a given spot then pull up stakes and move on to another spot for awhile. The idea was not to let the ones who sinned against God enter into the promised land.

Sorry, but there was no sugar growing in the Sinai Peninsula, so ergo no rum. Any fermenting fruit, vegetable or grain would make a semi-tolerable alcohol, though. It was actually more sanitary to drink alcohol b/c the bad germs would more be more likely to be killed off in the alcohol. Bad "question."

HAAA! where do you come up with these questions.
The desert is about 1/2 the size of California. They traveled with young, old, and ill. So maybe 40 times.

Funny, no mention of a compass anywhere in Exodus.
Plus, as morganie has said, God purged the sinful generation before allowing them into the promised land.
A week and a half across the Sinai, good luck!

Probably, if you are gullible to believe this stuff written by the ancient hebrews.

This is said to be the EXODUS out of Egypt, right ? How did they figure that, when the Sinai at that time was ALSO part of EGYPT.........

God got rid of the Egyptians, so I don't think this is a great thing to do. If they wanted to go against God and leave the dessert and not take thier punishment they could and lose out on the promise land for future generations. God gave it to their childrens.
