You are refering to a Fiance Visa.Firstly you have to complete the 8 page application form and this can be done on line then make an appointment to visit the Embassy in the country where you reside.A Visa could be given the same day as your visit to the embassy. It will be for 6 months and during that time you are expected to marry. You may then apply for a visa for 2 yrs during that time you may work but do not have recourse to Public Funds. The success of the Fiance visa will depend on many factors and the proper paperwork must be on order.Type in British Embassy this will take you to their site and to the application form which is easy to complete.

Can be only a few weeks if all the paperwork is in order and the application is straightforward. I've heard it's quicker from countries like the US rather than Jamaica or Pakistan. If the application is refused, you have an opportunity to appeal to the immigration court, that takes maybe six months.
