Why is it that so many people make such a big deal about breast cancer awareness? there are so many other diseases out there that people can talk about, why isn't there prostate cancer awareness month. I think it is all annoying and WAY over done, why make something out to be worse than it is and put to much emphasis on it. Stop all this annoying pink ribbon crap.. it's on EVERYTHING I'm about to stop buying anything that remotely supports it cause it's too over done, I'm to that point, is anyone else with me on this???

Matthew, Prostate cancer doesn't just effect the old it can also affect young and it is very devistgating to a family because it is detected less and therefore kills more, I'm not just talking about prostate cancer, that was just a example what about heart disease month or lung cancer awareness, Why involve businesses to have that stupid pink ribbon, talk about it amoungst yourselves Why involve everyone that doesn't care about it!!

i agree with you . im sick of watching discovery health with annouing people saying how they defeated cancer. wowooo your a real survivor NO ONE CARES you rase a good point. what about autisim, and spinal cord injury patients THEY dont get a month

Breast cancer is high profile right now because it's October which has been designated breast cancer awareness month. Now I have had breast cancer and I hate and dread BCAM, or Pink October as the more cynical of us call it.
Take a look at all that pink stuff for sale, and check the label or ask the retailer: what percentage of the sale price is going to breast cancer charities. Usually around 1% . Support for a deadly disease that kills on average more than 1,000 women a month in the UK alone has been turned into a marketing opportunity.
The pink fluffy stuff infuriates me, and I'm not at all 'tickled pink' by Asda's (Walmart's) trivialisation of an illness that may yet kill me. October magazines carry stories from cheerful survivors who claim to have the all-clear (there is no all-clear with breast cancer), and often say bc has changed their lives for the better - very different from anybody I know who's had breast cancer.
And here I come to one of your other points - you say why make something out to be worse than it is? - very far from doing that, Pink October , as I've said. trivialises a deadly disease, leading people to believe, as you apparently do, that breast cancer is
a) not very serious, certainly not as serious as many other cancers (many women with breast cancer have been told - by people who don't have it - that it's a 'good' cancer to get) and
b) curable. (my neighbour said to me 'they've just about got breast cancer licked, haven't they?' Really? Why are they still cutting women's breasts off then?)
I've even heard it said that it's a 'sexy' cancer - my sexy prosthesis and sexy one-breasted body are evidence that it's no such thing.
Yes, other cancers need more awareness, and while I hate 'competitive illness' I can see why there is some resentment about an imbalance in awareness raising and fund raising.
But breast cancer awareness month started as a campaign to raise awareness so that people knew the symptoms, examined themselves regularly, attended their routine mammograms etc. Enthusiastic participation by women made it grow into something nationally recognised and then big business cashed in.
As someone's pointed out, there is a prostate cancer awareness campaign and a ribbon, but I think men are less open and less willing to talk about their health and well, their prostates, which is unfortunate.
So yes, Pink October is awful, and other cancers need awareness campaigns (many have them but they don't receive so much support - or have as much work put into them). But don't lose sight of the fact that breast cancer is a killer disease with disfiguring surgery, grueling treatments and so far no cure. Just because the pink thing trivialises it doesn't mean it's trivial.

Obviously you have had nobody close to you die from cancer?? Yes there is alot of awareness about breast cancer but that is because 1 in 3 women get it!!! Pretty high statistics, and it also affects women very young. The more research into cancer the better, if they can determine what causes it or find a new treatment it will also help all other areas in cancer. My Mum died in sept this year after a 4 month battle with kidney cancer that spread to her liver and lung. So stop your arrogance, it ISNT made to be worse than it is, cancer is a horrific disease and watching your loved one died a painful death is shocking. Breast cancer or any cancer research i support 100%

So why don't you start a prostate cancer Awareness month? Oh no wait, that would require that you actually care. I am sure you are annoyed about anything for a good cause. Well it is not all about you. Do you Realize what a killer Breast cancer is and that Men can also get it? Has anyone you ever cared about had Cancer of any kind? Well My daughter has Cancer so you are barking up the wrong tree...No it is not Breast Cancer, but that does not lessen the passion I have for fighting Cancer. Any kind. I hope you never experience anything like that because I don't think you can handle it.

Breast cancer effects young females not only the old ones. Prostate cancer mainly kills old guys. There's also a cosmetic awareness that comes with having your breast removed. It's more difficult see that aftermath of having your prostate removed. Also all males will have prostate cancer if they live long enough.

You sure got sh*t started! Obviously you don't have a loved one who has breast cancer. As I write this now my mom is in the hospital and she has liver and bone cancer that did metasis from BREAST CANCER! I write it clearly and bold since it annoys you so much. So, sad and disgusted by your questions and some of those who answered what they answered. Shame on you the day you get breast cancer (which by the way man can get breast cancer!) I hope no one has pitty for you since you have no pitty for those who are diagnosed with this deadly disease. If it bothers you so much lock your damn self in your house for the month of October and dont step out. I feel no pitty for you!! Sorry for all of those who are upset that certain disease don't have a month of awareness if it BOTHERS you so much start organization and put awareness on it and stop complaining like a 5 yr old on yahoo answers! =) smile!!!
I am in this to help anyone who is sick and donate money to whom any organization I can but, I will not stop supporting Breast Cancer for NOTHING in this world!

Do you have womans breast? If yours is a prostate do your own thing. You just dont know how devastating it is for us women.We have to bond together and help each other. We wont complain if there is a prostate awareness month because we would understand.

There is a prostate cancer awareness month...and the ribbons are blue.
But I'm kinda sick of all the pink ribbon marketing myself.
