If it smells like crap and if it looks like crap, it's probably crap. If it came out of someone's or something's butt hole, it's definitely crap.

Miss Manners would say that you should be able to recognize it, but that you should not necessarily call undue attention to it.
One man's treasure is another man's crap. And there seems to be a huge lack of treasure on my side of the tent this year...
