I just got through answering a question and it reminds me of why I know christians cannot think for themselves..
Here is the jist of it....
The bible says that "Satan shall be called god of this earth"
In genesis.. it says that "Satan says they shall not die" and all those who are working for eternal life are working for satan... that is how the christians work at keeping "Satan" god.....

I see we have a hard time getting certain words such as sin out of religious context..... we have the exact same problems with the words good and evil...
Just something to make you THINK

not following the rules..... slavery was once a rule.... Only men voting was once a rule... Only the wealthy get money was once a rule.... it's not a sin to break the rules...

Sin is a problem made up by religion so they can sell you a solution. Don't buy it.

I believe that sin simply is the deficit between what God expects out of us verses what actions and directions we choose. I am a Christian, but I have thought it through as well.
I would like to challenge the last statement a bit. As a follower of Christ, I believe that we are required to think...quite a bit. It is, after all, my Faith that is constantly being challenged from every direction. There has been a fair amount of what I will call healthy doubt to enter my belief system in the past few years, and I have had to think and pray hard to get through them.
I know that some people really don't appreciate Christianity as a "valid," for lack of a better term, religion. I know you think of Christians as conservative, restrictive, and so on...I agree with you in many ways. I disagree with how the Church has treated many issues in the past several years. I don't think that we're doing a very good job of following Christ. I didn't see him building 40 million dollar buildings. I see in the church exactly what we're not supposed to do: self-servant hood. We are called to serve the rest of the world, but instead we live in a culture where churches are more concerned with the building fund than with the hundreds of people sleeping on the streets downtown.
Please don't assume that all Christians fall into this category.

sin is a religious word... kind of refering to wrong doing... we each have our own personal point of view... surely anyone sane should consider murder a sin.. but not killing self defense
I have read some answers... to say it's following rules is obsurd.. for slavery was once a rule... only rich people get to have money was a rule.. women shouldn't vote a rule.. seperating what is introduced by religion as a sane concept is a difficult task for many.

You question is a bit vague and also annoying because I am a bible-reading Christian who can think for herself.
Why don't you read a book called 'Mere Christianity' by CS Lewis that looks at the logic of a universal Moral Law and begins to develop the concepts that would help you define what right behaviour is and what is sin...
On a side note, I think that you are looking at it backwards... why don't you establish what is the right way to live/exist/love God and then realise that when you are not living like that, you are probably sinning.

Actually there shouldn't be any sin....but since the Devil has full reins on earth...and easily so.....people are so weak...common sense and morals have been replaced with want and stupidity, and self respect is nonexistent....respect period....non for others or their self.
But to say Christian don't think for their self is so over with...it's not true and saying it or writing it is not going to make it true...we don't get our itinerary on Sunday...sent in a superfax from God telling all of us what to do every waking moment of our life..... When you become a Christian ...you seek him...we have a unquenchable thirst for anything that will help us get closer to understanding and being able to sense him in our souls...he don't need us , we need him...and when a person realizes this then his soul wants to know the creator of this Universe...They are ready to know God, but he already knows them...and is ready to forgive their sins...people have such a problem about God and sin...God can't be where there is sin, if God came to Earth right now..he would destroy it...like Sodom and Gomorrah..and we've gone way passed them long time ago. To God sin is a disease and God is a suped up antibiotic his mission is to destroy it....If he didn't love us..his creation...we would all be in Hell right now and deserving everything we were getting...
But he loves us and has given us all a way out ..we don't have to live like we do people just love sin..the Devil has made it so enjoyable and fun.....and people have become like wild animals and don't care about nothing but themselves......so sad and you say Christian don't think for themselves...I beg to differ....without God you are the property of the Devil and he's leading all that follow him to hell and laughing every time you do something that he tells you to do...us Christian don't think for ourself....Honey if only God did do what you say..that would be great...then no one would get fired, or get sick, or have family to die....you people of like mind as you...don't have a clue as to what the truth is..all of you say the same thing like a Chatty Kathy doll and the Devil is pulling your strings.......

A highly reprehesible action. Unfortunately, this does not occur without a prior definition of good and evil. A society that defines its own laws separates what is highly acceptable and what is not. Those things that are accepted are placed in one category. The remainder is defined by not being included. Sin is a separation from what is accepted.

Am a christian. Sin is only a word. That points to avoid all that makes no good to us. That hurts us or damage in one way or other. Its the result of no following the rules that makes as safe.
As a red light prevent us from suffer an accident. as example and all signals on earth to take care of our lives.
Sin affects ourselves and others too. As the parents says thousands NO to the child for his welfare. If he disobeys the one to be hurt is the child. Hope it s no so confuse what i try to explain

Sin is only meaningful if one believes in a god. I have an internal set of morals which basically avoids harming myself or others and promotes the good of all mankind - (wow sounds good in text, a bit harder in real life).

I was going to answer the question but then I read that little added info and decided your question just isnt worth the effort anymore.
Was there really a good reason to add that nasty little sidenote?
and before you think I am some fundie christian, I am mormon and have been bashed on by atheists and by fundies but having a faith or a belief in your church does not mean you are brainwashed or stupid
You can believe in something that someone else taught you and still think for yourself.

My dear, sin is the transgression of the Law. God made the Law, you break it, you sin. There is no what sin should be? Because sin is defined by God, if you don't believe in God, you don't believe in sin. It is very simple, I don't know what you don't get here.
