You might look at the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It's expensive, but it has a powerful hybrid drivetrain and can deliver over 30 mpg in city driving.

The Toyota Rav 4 is another option. It's smaller, but the new ones are the biggest they've ever been. They have a powerful available v-6 and impressive fuel economy...19/26 with the V-6. (new epa numbers....the old numbers gave it 30 highway, I believe.)

Toyota Tacoma if you want a pickup. 20/25 mpg 2wd.

My '07 Tacoma quad cab prerunner V-6 gets 19 mpg around town. It is the best mid-size truck out right now, I did my research. Toyota is the first name in reliability, resale, and overall value. The mid-size SUV with a V-6(can't remember the name) is basically the same vehicle.

the recent HEMI's have that gas saving function that shuts down 4 cyl. on the line. i'm getting 22-24 mpg in mine. My buddys 07' chevy has a exhaust manifold leak allready, he's merchandising it, i think of for a evade or Ford, yet he gets 20-24 mpg highway additionally.

my dakota rocks. i have never had a batter rig. but trucks will get better gas mileage, espically if you get a camper shell for it (because of the aerodynamics)

look into some of the turbo desil rigs. those things pull over 22mpg.
