The higher being is just your conscious, morals instilled in you by those who raise you
The thoughts inside your head that say ...you should, you shouldnt...
Hoe do christians meld into society,
Satanist, how do they meld,...
Hindus, Maharishis, Vegans, Vegitarians...
They do what they do ...live their life how they want to..what makes sense to them by what they have experienced...
Besides why would you want to go along with society anyways...there is no free thinking in that...
There is birth and there is death, those two things happen, we cannot excape them...
What we believe and do inbetween in most cases is just a waste of time before the inevitable...
Will any of it matter when we are put in the ground,
Wether people show up to your funeral or not, does it matter in the end? NO...
So meshing and mingling into a followers sheepish path I guess really isnt that important either...
Being a hereitic is much more important...
breaking the limitations created by thought is much more important and in the end,...if broken at the right time for the right reasons will create future history and make you immortal...
Leonardo Di Vince,
Harriet Tumbman,
Malcom X , Martin Luther King,
Kennedy,
Nostradomus,...Al Gore,
Stephen Hawkings...
Do you think any of those people were busy giving a ..... about what other people think...no!

Hey, how do ya'll know what my morals are? Why do ya'll assume that I have none? Why do ya'll think ya'll need a higher being to BE moral? Morality is subjective, sister. You think Christians have the market cornered on morality, but that's just YOUR own set of values. If you'd been raised in a different religion, your morals would be different. I was raised without religion and was taught to respect the law, be a good person, be honest, work hard, and be kind to others. I didn't need a book to tell me how to do those things. I really take offense at people who say atheists by nature are immoral. You don't know me, so how dare you claim anything about me? It would be like me saying "If you're a Christian, you must beat your kids since the bible says spare the rod."

If you think about it, you'll probably realize that the moral aspect derives from the society in which it developed.
In the long view, you might want to consider that we evolved from and thus became "social" animals with a genetic predisposition to behavior that benefits the group. As we became conscious, we became capable of remembering and thinking about how our behavior effected those around us. Moving from the neolithic clan structure to the more complex agricultural societies, the moral stuctures became more complex to accomodate the new demands.
And so it continues, to the present day, as we social animals continue to adapt to the complex demands of society.
Society, not religion, dictates the mores that your religion embraces.
Glad to have been of help.

I am an atheist. I live with moral values that are taught to me by my parents, my teachers and the society in which I choose to live.
No gods required.
If you need some god to tell you right from wrong, I prefer that you remain a god-believer. That way, you can always be sure to behave correctly in public. Atheists do not need god to behave correctly.

Morals are something that is decided by the society.
I just follow the laws.
Morals did not come from any gods. If they did there wouldn't be a different set of morals in each country and they wouldn't have changed so drastically over time.
By the way, when did god decide it was immoral to do 45 in a school zone?

One thing that is valued in atheism is education. Atheists tend to rely heavily on what can be demonstrated.
To take morals from a creature that one can only imagine to exist places one on shaky ground indeed. Take a look at the Christian Bible. In one section it tells us to take unruly children and kill them.
Morality can be easily explained with evolution. Behaviors that threaten a society would necessarily be negatively reinforced. Stealing food threatens the survival of the group; stealing skins and weapons does the same thing. Therefore, stealing becomes wrong. No God is necessary to inform us that that which threatens society is necessarily, and by extension, harmful to ourself.

It's the old "all morals come from a god, and specifically my god".
If you found out tomorrow that no gods have ever existed, would you start killing, raping and stealing? Is your belief the only thing preventing you from doing that right now?
If so, are you really a moral person?
If theists believe they are rewarded for doing good, it's only atheists who only do good because they are good, not because they believe they will be rewarded.
And let me point out that your god is not somebody I'd consider moral - sending bears to kill kids for making fun of a bald guy, murdering babies, drowning kittens...

How do you know that I have no moral aspect to my life? Humans are social animals, and like all social animals, there are rules to be a member of the tribe, pack, or herd. Morals are socially prescribed, not divinely ordained.

The same way the Israelites did before Moses handed down the 10 Commandments. Do you suppose they were all killing each other, robbing one another, and perjuring each other prior to that? Obviously not, or they would never have made it to the mountain in the first place.
Morals come from a combination of innate tendencies and socialization, not imaginary sky creatures.

I wish you wouldn't have asked this, I'm trying to cut back on my drinking.
What makes you think atheists have no moral codes? Maybe I'm in a bad mood today, but this question is starting to make me a little angry. Should I ask how Christians pass science classes when their religion teaches them to abandon logic?
