I was wandering how to get our 5month old Great Dane to sleep in the bedroom with us. I normally don't let my dogs do this, but my husband goes to work at 3 or 4am and I'm by myself. We have three dogs, but the two little ones aren't fully housebroke yet or I'd train all three to sleep with us. This way when my husband leaves I can feel a little more safe. Any tips on how to train her to sleep in our bedroom? Also I'm a little nervous about her having an accident although she has only had two accidents in the house since we've owned her, but then again she's been crate trained and she's never had this much space during the night.

You can put a crate in the bedroom and let her sleep in the crate. Make sure you put her outside to go to the bathroom before putting her in the crate, you still might have to wake up to let her out though, puppys have small blaters. you can also leave the crate door open if you want her to have the run of the room.

hmm, usually all you have to do is open the door to the room, get into bed and the dog will be there within a few seconds. careful though i remember quite a few times waking up in the middle of the night because my wonderful Great Dane pushed me off the bed :-), they get really big and love to stretch out completely which really doesn't leave much room for anyone else of the bed, no matter the size :) . BTW usually puppys are not completely house broken yet at that age, so you are likely to still have some accidents

I'd put a crate in your room and let her sleep in there. I've never shared my bed with a Dane, but I've shared it with a Rottie and a Lab (at the same time), and also my two labs. They're all bed hogs, as most dogs are, and since Danes aren't itty bitty, you'll be fighting for your spot on the bed before you know it. If you really want her on the bed, put her crate in your room and leave the crate door open. Basically, let her choose, and if you need to, you can shut her in the crate.

Jennifers answer was perfect..I have two great danes and crate training is the most important thing to help them pottie train as well as help them feel safe. After they are potty trained move them on to the bed. Remember It's easier to crate train first and if the make a boo boo you can always go back to the crate for a short time. Good luck!!

Once my friend's cocker spaniel slept in my bed with me...and she took up a good portion of the bed. Got in the center and stretched out and I did not get any good sleep that night.

Picture trying that with a great dane...full grown or not!

If she sleeps in a crate next to the bed that will be fine, or you can even train her to sleep on a dog bed.

If you plan on sharing the bed, even a king size bed may be too small!

Put her crate in the bedroom, and let her sleep in the crate until she's fully housebroken. Once she is, replace the crate with a nice dog blanket that she can relax and stretch out on. Make sure you put the blanket in the exact same spot where the crate was. She'll get the idea. You can get the blanket and put it in the crate with her now if you want. Either way, she'll figure it out. Don't give her the run of the bedroom before she's housebroken though.

make sure shes house trained first :)
but what you can do is get your husband to help you. and offer him a treat to get on the bed and train your dog to stay. you can train him to do that with two people. Person A holds the leash. Person B says "stay!" then walks away with a treat thats visible to the dog. person A must be able to hold the dog firmly and make sure he knows how to sit on command too.

to train him onto the bed you just offer him a treat onto the bed, and then tell him to stay. usually after a week they get the routine. also try closing the door and the dog will feel more comfortable, and part of the pack(dogs are all pack oriented) naturally. Make sure your husband gets him on there before he leaves for work too!

Hope that helps :)

good luck,

It won't take her long I wouldn't think. She "shouldn't" potty in your bed once she figures out that is her bed too. Call her up there with you and treat her. Spend extra time in there perhaps watching to coax her up there offer her treats when she gets up there. Don't know I have never had a problem with getting any of them used to a cozy bed. Is it too hot for her? Always take her out before bed and even if she starts stiring in the middle of the night or if you get up for something.

How you trained other 2 dogs sleep in your bed room, same adjustment has to be done for this 3rd one also. When he realize he is safe with you he will show his loveless to you as a master.

Its easy to get her to sleep on the bed, just set her on it. The hard part is getting them to stop once they start. Might be easier to just put a bed for them beside your bed and then they are right beside you. Only thing I find difficult with a dog on the bed is they move around and wake you up.
