hear, hear!
people are stupid, and the dumb kiddos at frat parties are, in fact, just looking to get sloshed. no respect for their tastebuds.
for some reason, it has been decided that chugging nasty beer until you're vomiting on strangers and stumbling about like a buffoon is a great way to spend a friday night.
isn't it great that this is culturally acceptable??
and, on that note, hooray for all the delicious autumnal microbrews that are in season!
i've had some darn good pumpkin ales this week.
delicious!

At these kind of partys its not so much about the taste of the beer as it is the fact that it IS beer. The thing to do there is to play drinking games and to see how much you can possibly drink. With the cheaper light beers your stomach doest get full like it would after a few rich lagers, and the cost is much less. The hard stuff like the vodka will get you drunk much easier but it just doesn't give you the same "party" feeling. The college kids are not all that worried about the calories from drinking so many beers, but quite a few of them have realized that hard liquor gets things to carried away and can be much more dangerous and involve trips to the hospital.

I am an undergrad, but you will never catch me with that macrobrewed pseudo-beer of which you described. I respect beer (and my taste buds) too much to ever swallow that swill. And I don't drink to get drunk either. The most I will have is two beers in a sitting, no more than that.
This past weekend I enjoyed some Samuel Adams. About a month ago I tried Smithwick's for the first time. I also enjoyed one of the fine microbreweries in my area just a couple weeks ago. Sampled their "Oktoberfest" brew, which tasted like Yuengling, though maybe a little better.
Anyway, it's never the cheap crap for me. The thing is though good beer really isn't that much more expensive. It's worth it to spend a couple bucks more and get quality.

people drink for many different reasons, that you know already. those that drink to get drunk and don't care about taste might want to save some cash. you can't really play beer pong with vodka. besides, most college kids are poor anyway and can't afford the good stuff. they have $20 to spend. that either gets them a medium sized bottle of average vodka, a case of bud, or two thirty packs of genesee (shivers at the memory). 60 beers will make a party last longer than 24.

I never drink to get drunk. I drink to enjoy.
I spend the extra money for a quality drink. Sure, I can get a 12-pack of Pabst for about $6, but I prefer to step up and get a 12 of Gordon Biersch Blonde Bock for about $11
