I cannot speak for your country or state. However I can speak about where I live that is Maricopa County, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. If they pick up a wondering dog and you go down to the local shelter and you find your dog, they do charge you for the dog. Here they charge you a pick up fee, a handling fee, boarding fee, and some other fees. In addition this is JUST AN FYI Also here in Arizona, If the dog is not picked up with in a certain amount of days they put the dog up for adoption.

More than likely, you will be charged. City and county employees must be paid.
BTW, to AnnaLynn, I used to volunteer grooming services regularly at your M.C.R.A.C. on 35th Ave in Phoenix in the 80's and 90's before I moved out of state. Small world.

Yes, they will charge you as well as fine you if your dog is not properly licensed.
Did you think that picking up your dog was a free service for irresponsible owners?

It depends on where you live. Get on your city or county's website if you have one I am sure the information is on there. The city I live in provides a "Safe Ride Home" program where if your pet has an ID tag with an address the officer will try to bring it by, if you aren't there they will house it at the shelter and call you and let you know it's there.

Yes, they'll charge you a fine for picking up the dog, and then probably charge you a boarding fee for housing him all night.

As long as you can show positive Identification and the papers on your dog, you shouldn't have any trouble getting your dog back.I would doubt that they would charge you anything for getting him back.

if the dog was tied out - then they took him on a cruelty violation
if he was running loose then they have him on stray violation
you will have fees to pay as well as a license to buy if you don't have one & proof of current rabies. be sure to take that with you
