My female maltese is 8 mos old and going through heat. She drives my older dog, a 5 yr old male bichon frise, crazy. She jumps on his face and humps him. He sometimes tries to hump her too and they get very aggressive now with each other, and I'm beginning to find light bites and scratches on her skin when I leave them alone together. Also, she has been destroying everything in the house! I have an appointment to get her neutered in january, so until then, should I keep them seperate to keep them from fighting?

Also, they never used to fight before this, they used to be best friends but now I can't leave them alone for two seconds without them going crazy

You don't want them fighting while you are not there, things could possibly escelate and turn out badly. Put them in separate rooms. Trust me, it's just the sexual tension! Try and see if you can take her to another vet to get the procedure done earlier than january.

It depends on if they are only fighting when she is going through her heat cycle. And don't get your female dog neutered, get her spayed, because you can't neuter a female. Anyway, if it is only while she is going through heat I would definately separate them. She is making the other dog crazy. She is only doing what is natural for her and it is a very uncomfortable time for her. Be reassuring to her and give her extra attention and love, even though she may be driving you crazy whining and humping or destroying everything. Get her some new toys and chewies so she will destroy them instead of your house!

Good luck :)

Your little girl dog is old enough to be neutered, but you have to wait till she goes out of heat to do it. Which will happen before january unless you just don't have the funds till then. If your male dog is fixed then I wouldn't worry about it. From my experience puppies will aggrevate an old dog to distraction. The older dog will act snooty, but will eventually get ticked off and play back. Sometimes roughly. They're just learning their place in your little pack. You should seperate them for a while if it seems they're getting too rough and one of them actually get's hurt, but if you look close, a fight that sounds totally viscious may not be that bad and even though they sound like bats out of hell, they may be being gentle. Good luck.

females r spayed. and get both or ur dogs fixed. the female should have been spayed 2 months ago and the male should have been neutered 4 years and 6 months ago. y did u make ur appointment so far out

EDIT: u must either have a popular vet or live in a big city. since ur male is already neutered u shouldnt have to worry about her getting pregnant all u have to worry about is the fighting. if they r showing aggression then seperate them if they arent then they r fine

You should probably separate them if you don't want puppies. Just in case because you can't stop nature from running its course and if she is in heat they might mate. Just get her spayed as soon as possible. She is only 8 months but you never know. Maybe you should let them mate cause those would be adorable puppies and you could sell them for a lot of money :) Good Luck

Hi Marm,

Unless you want a litter of energetic, funny little maltese, I think the safest way to go is to get them away from eachother. If you cant sit down for one minute that is a sure sign that they need some time apart.
Also, if they are fighting and hurting eachother, your female may be starting these and you should NOT KEEP THEM ANYWHERE NEAR EACH OTHER.

Find a new vet and get your female spayed. You are going to create a pair that don't get along just cause you are not stopping the fighting.. Don't let them be together at all when she is in heat. Correct them when they fight..

You should separate them immediately. After your girl is over with her heat, you should make appointment to have her spayed. So you don't need to worry about them in the future.

Shell out the cash to get her fixed. Hormones can and will cause some serious issues between dogs, even if they are the best of friends normally.
