You can and should. If anything was withheld for federal income tax you'll get it refunded to you. You might also be eligible for a small Earned Income Credit.

Of course you can file a tax return. Whether you get a refund depends on some other information.

Are you claimed as a dependent by someone? A parent? A boyfriend? Someone else? Each case is treated differently.

If you can be claimed as a dependent, then you aren't going to get any credit for the child on your return. If you are not a dependent, then you can put the child on your return and get an Earned Income Credit of $179.

Did you pay taxes on the $500?

Chances are that you can take adavantage of the Earned Income Credit, or something, and if no one claimed you, or you child as a dependent, then I would recommend trying to get some free money from the government.
