Chihuahuas are not the breed for everyone. Because they are very small, special consideration needs to be given on the type of home they go to. Chihuahuas are a very sensitive breed. An active household with young children and other household pets like cats and larger dogs may not be suitable to the Chihuahua. Please do ALOT of research before considering . You may also want to look into the Pug, Bichon Frise or Cavalier King Charles spaniel these dogs are a little more tolerant of the things mentioned above.

Some might say a Chihuahua is a good pet to have and easy to take care of. I have a 17month old Chihuahua, and she's a handful. I love her to death, but if you don't have time for it don't get one. It took me 6months to housebreak mine, and just recently she has decided to have a relapse and will pee outside, but poop inside. She isn't good with children, although the past two months or so she's got alot better around my 3yr. old neice. They are VERY protective. Mine won't even let my husband touch me! I think all Chihuahua's are different though, when I got mine she was very skittish, I think the owner I got her from would beat her. Still to this day she doesn't like men. I think if you have the time and willing put in a lot of effort go for it, but if you just want a pet that's easy to care for, I'd consider a different breed. I hope I helped!

I recently got my first dog...I wanted a chihuahua. Everyone kept telling me not to get one - they were too small, too fragile, bad with kids...etc. etc. After doing a lot of research on-line about them, I decided it would be best to get a chihuahua mix. Not only are they cheaper...but if you get one that's bred with another small dog, you still get the little dog size without having to worry about them being so delicate. Also, Chihuahua's aren't good with kids...so having a mixed breed can help that too. I have a chihuahua-terrier mix. He'll probably get about 7 pounds when he's full grown...he's great with kids and other dogs...and plays with our cat too.
Before you get a dog though, make sure you do a lot of research....and don't purchase a dog on-line without being able to go and see it in person. One important thing is the cost. Purebreds are really expensive...The cheapest I found (from a reliable breeder) was $800 and I ended up getting my mix-puppy for $100!!! The money you save will help pay for vet bills, food and supplies.

If you don't have kids w/ you, Chihuahuas could be a good companion for you. It is very well known for its loyalty and priced devotion to it's owner. It has the attitude of pricing only one owner and tends to get jealous of its owners' other companions. So if you have a boyfriend or a very close friend that goes along with you almost everytime, this dog would treat him/her as its enemy for the price of you!
They are also ferocious. They're fearless to the point that they would attack bigger dogs and wouldn't accept defeat. They would only get together w/ fellow chihuahuas making them a clanish breed. They also bite esp. when they get frightened or nervous.
Yes it is quite a good pet if you are living in a condo or a flat due to its small size, which also makes it a very adaptable dog. It easily adapts to its new environment unlike other dogs and its curiosity is also very striking. Also if you define "good" in a way that it can be easily trained...uhmmm...well, it could be trained, but not that easily. You'll need patience! That's for sure
If you want this dog because of its cute nature (as it is small) well, let me suggest other toy breeds close to those of chihuahuas.
1. A yorkshire terrrier (also known as a Yorkie) is one of the cutest dogs that most people love. It's generally intelligent, independent and courageous. It can quickly determine where it fits in a household's "pack." It's behavior towards outsiders will vary - it will often be inclined to bark at strangers, but some Yorkies are outgoing and friendly towards new people while others are withdrawn and aloof. The differences in behavior in this regard are largely based on how you will train or condition (and socialize) your Yorkie.
2. Affenpinscher is an active, adventurous, curious, and stubborn, but it's also fun-loving and playful. It's confident, lively, affectionate towards family members and also very protective of them. It needs consistent, firm training because some can be quite difficult to housebreak. The training should be varied because the dog can easily become bored.
It's somewhat territorial when it comes to its toys and food, so it's not recommended for very small children. It's mostly quiet but can become very excited if attacked or threatened and shows no fear toward any aggressor. It is best suited for a family who likes a show and has a sense of humor.
Also this dog can be a very good watch dog, though not of a guard dog because of its small size.
3. Dachshunds are playful, fun dogs, known for their propensity to chase small animals, birds and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. They are known for their devotion and loyalty to their owners. If raised improperly, dachshunds can become aggressive or fearful. They require a caring owner that understands their need to have entertainment and exercise.
Some other dogs that you might like are the following:
Australian Silky Terrier
Havanese
Japanese Chin
Japanese Pinscher
Coton de Tulear
Mini Pinscher
Papillon dog
Maltese
Bolognese dog
chow chow
Belgium Griffon
and many more...

It's all I could tell you... I hope I helped you somehow... The dog I have is a siberian husky. Their great for me since i have an active lifestyle. Try to look a dog that would fit yours.
Oh and pls, try giving your dog a very nutritious diet so it won't have health problems... don't over feed him/her w/ dog food. try mixing it w/ a bit of raw meat at least 2-3x a week so that its immune system would not fail(make it only once a week until it reaches its 1st yr). So as to mix grated carrots to its food... but not to much ok?! Just a dash to cleanse its stomach.! You could also try garlic. & one more thing, try putting a drop or two of apple-cidder vinegar to its water (of 200 mL) to help its stomach in its digestion....
Have a great dog! Good luck!

Well... a chihuahua dosent make the best pet. They have a tendency to be mean. I looked at my dog breeds book and it said the best first time dogs for people are.......
Calvalier King Charles Spaniel
Border Terrier or
Labrador Retriever.
I highly recommend a lab. They are easy to train, affectionate, athletic, and great with kids. But, if you live in an area where you need a small dog get one of the others.

Any pet is a big responsibility. You have to be prepared to care for it. Clean up messes and give it the attention it needs. If you have considered all of these things then a small dog would make a wonderful pet :)

Chihuahuas are wonderful. They are not as horrible as people make them out to be. I have three... Although, they're not for everyone. They are extremely protective and need to be well trained and socialized, so you have to be prepared to work with them... all the time. They are a lot of work, but they are worth it. I would definitely recommend reading more about the breed before getting one... especially since it is your first pet. Be prepared BEFORE you get one.

yea chuhwawas are not a good pet. they dont have a sufficient size brain to be worth keeping. why would you even want to get a dog based on your ethnicity, thats probably one of the worst reasons to get a dog. Yea im afghani i should get an afghan hound, oh yea im portuguese i have a portugues water dog, oh im retarded i have a chiwawa. for a first pet you want to get a larger, sturdier dog. a pit bull would be a great choice if you can afford the time to exercise it often. they are very strong, probably strongest dog (pound for pound). They love to please their master and are very, very smart dogs, and they have better temperaments than a labrador or even a collie (like lassie). an American Pit Bull Terrier is the way to go for a pet. You can walk around the worst part of town at 2 am with your pit and no ones gonna mess with you (even though thats based on a false stereotype)

Just because your Mexican doesn't mean that you have to get a chihuahua.
Chihuahuas in my opinion are one of the ugliest dogs in the world. Some are cute but others are plain ugly!
Chihuahuas are also very fragile so you will have to be careful with it and that also means lots of vet visits!
Most things are to big for them! Get a slightly bigger dog, like a Cockapoo!!!! Those are the best dogs in the world! They are friendly, love to play, loyal, and fun!
If you do get a Chihuahua don't spoil it with Ridiculous t-shirts that say Princess or Little Miss Sunshine..... that is so stupid.....
