I take it Jesus purchased NOTHING at the cross except a lottery ticket?

srprimeaux, "he died for those he knew would come to him..." And since he also knew who wouldn't choose him, some are created solely for destruction.

Christ died for His people, His sheep.

Mat 1:21 And she will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.

Joh 10:11 I am the Good Shepherd! The Good Shepherd lays down His life on behalf of the sheep.

I believe in the doctrine of limited atonement, which is very Biblical. Jesus did not die for all the sins of all people, otherwise you have a conundrum. You have forgiven, redeemed people in Hell. If one says it is up to us to believe and appropriate that sacrifice to us, then either He died for the sin of unbelief, in which case, it wouldn't matter, or He didn't die for that sin, and since we all at one time did not believe, we would still have unforgiven sin against us. Christ died for all the sins of the elect, those whom God chose out for salvation before the foundation of the world, their names written in the lambs book of life.

Eph 1:4 even as He elected us in Him before the foundation of the world, for us to be holy and without blemish before Him in love,
Eph 1:5 predestinating us to adoption through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

Php 4:3 And I also ask you, true yoke-fellow, help those who struggled along with me and with Clement in the gospel, and the rest, fellow-workers with me, whose names are in the Book of Life.

Rev 13:8 And all those dwelling in the earth will worship it, those of whom the names had not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb having been slain from the foundation of the world.

So, if you accept Christ, you can only do so if God has given you the faith to believe, indwelt you with the Spirit and opened your eyes and ears to the truth. It is all of God, not of you. And if you have been chosen for salvation, God did the choosing before the world came into being.

Jesus already died for you. Whether you believe it or not. Read the book of Revelation in the bible and some of the books before it. The bible was written a long time ago but predicts things that will happen in the future. Many of the things have already happened.

The future doesn't determine the past. Jesus knows those who are His and He knows who the Father will draw to Him. It's based on that that Jesus died. He died for those that He knew would come and whom He knew that God has given to Him. Remember, God is outside of time. He sees the end and the beginning at the same time.

Edited: They're condemned for their own sins. God doesn't pour evil into someone and then damn them because of it. Men condemn themselves by sinning of their own accord. God is sovereign and man is responsible.

A lottery ticket? Hardly. Jesus purchased your salvation. His life for yours. A gift, which you can chose to accept or deny.

Jesus knew exactly what He was doing. No gamble for Him. But what about you? Will you gamble your destiny as if it were a lottery ticket?

Great question, kj7gs!

I agree with BrotherMichael on this one, because his answer is based squarely on the Bible.

Limited Atonement (or preferably, "Particular Redemption") is the key to your question. The elect of God "accept Jesus" BECAUSE He died for them, and for them alone. He purchased the faith and repentance that the Holy Spirit gives to them after they are born again.

When Christ went to Calvary 2000 years ago, He had "His people", the "elect" in mind. He KNEW his sacrifice for them would be a success. He wasn't betting on the lottery like we do. By His death on the accursed tree, He bought every conceivable combination of numbers with the infinite cost of His divine blood, GUARANTEEING the salvation of His chosen ones, whom God the Father had selected before the beginning of time!

Soli Deo Gloria!

He came so that each person may have life and have life more abundantly.
-
(John 10: 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.)

He died so that anyone that believes may be saved.
-
(John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.)

Some not all....

As for death. This life is all the life some people may ever have so Cheistians can be compassionate in knowing this!

Future vs. past? God is outside of time. Stay in His word and faithful to the end.

John 1:14
The Spirit became flesh so we could understand him.
The men of that day killed him for telling them that. He did not die for your sins (as some price demanded by some superior deity) he died because of sin. He was killed because the sinners did not like what he said or did.

Guess what they still don't.

We can know for certain that Jesus died for HIS people:

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." - Matthew 1:21.

We hit a different fork in the road however when we ask exactly who are His people, although it does seem clear ...

"The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is." - Revelation 17:8.

Have you ever studied the "false balance", "diverse weights, and diverse measures", mentioned so beautifully in the book of Proverbs?::::

11:1, "A false balance is ABOMINATION to the Lord:::but a just weight is his delight".

20:10, "Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike ABOMINATION to the Lord".

20:23, "Divers weights are an ABOMINATION unto the Lord; and a FALSE balance is not good".

Think about the scales held in the hands of Lady Justice; a weight equal to the amount to be purchased, is placed on one side, and the purchased item is added to the other side ,until the scale is in balance.

Now, think about our sin debt, being on one side of the scale of JUSTICE, and think about the payment placed on the other side, as being the sacrifice of Jesus'. Does ANYTHING ELSE NEED TO BE ADDED TO THE SCALE?
It is an ABOMINATION unto our Lord to think we can, in any way, contribute to the balancing of those scales.

I honestly believe that this doctrine is what "stands in the Holy place"; man's belief that he must add to the scale of justice inorder for it to be balanced; "not of works, lest any man should BOAST".
