C.S Lewis is one of the greatest, "Mere Christianity" I recommend it to all the atheists, also "Screwtape Letters". Those are 2 awesome books by him. I also like Philip Yancey: "Where is God when It Hurts?", "Disappointment with God", "What's so Amazing about Grace?".

Eddie Chumney (has a website)
1. Who is the Bride of Christ? I think this was his first book.
2. The Seven Festivals of the Messiah (his second?)
3. The Two Houses of Israel (last, maybe.)
You can order all 3 as a set, if I recall correctly. I loaned out my copy of "Bride" and they kept it - that's the second time, too, so apparently other people like it pretty well.
Eddie's books are geared toward beginners.
Avi ben Mordechai did a commentary on Galations which is pretty good. He also has a series called "Messiah" which I have. The third volume is out of print but the first two volumes are still available. His website is millennium7000.com, I think.
Avi's books are geared toward people with a good knowledge of the Bible, but is still readable for beginners if you go slowly. It's very scripturally intensive.

John Locke, Plato...
I don't know if you meant just Christian authors, but they're teaming with Christian values (even though Plato was BC, he wrote about applicable themes). Traditional Western values (though not all, and not necessarily those which are practiced) often have a base in or relation to Christianity.

I'm not really into inspirational books. One of my favorite authors though is Jonathan Lethem. I like everything he's written including the short stories.
