You will take the standard deduction for a dependent, which may be different than the standard deduction for a nondependent.

If you have only earned income such as wages or self-employment, then the standard deduction for you is the same as for a nondependent, which is $5,350 for 2007.

If you have only unearned income, your standard deduction is $850.

If you have both earned and unearned income, your standard deduction is

Earned income + $300, but not less than $850 or more than $5,350.

So if you had $2,000 of wages and $500 of interest for example, your standard deduction is $2,300 and you have to file a return and pay taxes. Quite different than if you were a nondependent.

Yes you do, and do not EVER give someone else your w-2's to file with unless you are married to them. If they claim you as a dependant they get the dependancy exemption but YOU get your standard deduction. The rules are different if your income is from investments.

Yes, you get a standard deduction, but not an exemption for yourself.
