He has been coughing really bad for 2 days now and he coughs to the point he actually throws up. He has constantly got a runny nose and red eyes. I know the chemists wont give me anything to help with a cough because he's under 2 years old.
Im sick of cleaning up his sicks and changing his clothes 3 times a day cos of the mess.
What can i do do help ease his cough. I feel bad for him going through this.

I have been going through this with my 23MO. After I had her checked for Pneumonia, they gave me a script for Albuterol which is a bronchial dialator, and it did nothing to help the cough. They didn't give her anything else since they recently took all the cold and cough meds off the market for those under 2 (in the US). After four or five days of this and no relief in sight, I gave up and started giving her a reduced dose of Dextromorphan, half of what 2 to 6 YOs take (1/4 teaspoon of Delsyn syrup for kids). I also have been putting Vicks Vaporub on her chest at night, running a humidifier in her room, steaming up the bathroom when she bathes, flushing her nasal passages with saline. It took another week for the coughing to improve enough she would only wake up to cough when the Dextromorphan wore off, and it is now a month later (and a recheck with the doctor only put her on antibiotics) and she still coughs some but it doesn't keep her up at night or make her throw up.

Let me put the caveat out there that she has taken Dextromorphan before, so I know what dose she can handle and that she doesn't react badly to it. And I don't know what the equivalent is where you are, but a internet search would probably product something. Good luck!

If he is throwing up from coughing he is most likely gagging on all of the mucous. Get your child to the doctor to make sure he doesn't have pneumonia settled into his lungs. For a good home remedy, go in the bathroom and put the shower on as hot as you can with the door closed, then take the child in to the bathroom and let the steam help him for about ten minutes.

Time to see the doctor. Vomiting can lead to dehydration so make sure that he has plenty of fluids such as Pedialyte or even flat ginger ale. The doctor can determine if this is a virus and what treatment is really necessary. You sure don't want this to end up with pneumonia.

take him in a hot shower (keep him out of the hot water of course) and let him breath in the steam. this should help break up the mucus.

good luck. hope he gets better soon.
