Well...pretty bad. If you are depressed, then hopefully you (or someone who loves you) will get you to a doctor and they will start therapy with you and most likely put you on antidepressants. People who end up in an institution: 1. Refuse to take their pills (kind of common, actually, for mentally ill people); and/or 2. Try to kill themselves or threaten suicide or homicide.

A depressed person can end up very suicidal. If the depression is not being treated, or the medications are not working.
Usually. they will have to be evaluated, then go into a hospital to be stabilized. Typically, a depressed person will get out a lot sooner then some other mental illnesses. Often times it can be treated as an outpatient, this is preferred.
The 72 hour hold is when the person is evaluated. A person can end up in anther hospital if the psychiatrist feels that the patient needs inpatient treatment. If that happens the person can be kept up to 90 days... Then it could be longer if there is a court order. It is actually not that hard for the psychiatrist to place a person for 90 days... However the doctor will contact the family and discuss what is the best thing to do. A lot of times the family will have a lot of input on the decision .

Talk to your Doctor if you are seeing one. They will know. If you aren't seeing a doctor, try and get in asap.
Everyone is different on how they handle depression. If left untreated, it will overcome you. Do you cry constantly?
Do you fear of going out? Do you work?
Do you feel worthless? Are you angry?
do you sleep a lot?
Are you on any medicines? If so, they don't always work and you have to try different ones with different doses. Takes a little time, but it's worth it.
Do you or someone you know wants to go to one? We are not doctors on here (well I'm not) but I genuinely care about you and I know depression myself. In my case, it started out being hurt by my children, then my mother and sister. I'm seeing a counselor because I need to take care of me first right now.
I have always taken care of people in my life except myself, but my counselor is helping me with that. Some days I can't do anything except lay in bed. She told me that's ok. (I also have health problems so I add that to my depression too. )
I don't sleep well, I may eat once a day, I started drinking "Ensure" just to make sure I got some nutrients.
I don't want to be depressed, I don't think anyone does, but it can be controlled.
If you feel your life is so worthless and there's nothing left to live for, I highly suggest it. You need to be monitored and on the right medicines.
It dosn't always mean you are insane, it depends on what brought on your depression and your lack of being able to get a hold of it. I do know, there are so many reasons for depression, the list is long.
Please get help, we are also here for you if you just need to chat, no judgeing you if you want to email me.
Good luck ~

well..."mental insitutions" now called psychiatric hospitals/facilities can really only hold you for up to 72 hours. anything longer than that needs another hold written.
basically, if you claim that you want to hurt yourself or someone else, and will not contract for safety, then you can be admitted for up to 72 hours. it isn't like the old days like in "Girl Interrupted" where they can keep you there forever and a day. Long term institutions are usually for people with more severe illnesses along with mental issues (like mental retardation). Alot of insurance companies won't pay for someone to be in treatment longer than 30 days.
Another way to go to a psych hospital is to be "gravely disabled" meaning you are no longer caring for yourself or your children because you are so depressed or psychotic. This one is subject to interpretation and even then it is hard to keep someone longer thatn 72 hours.

The most important consideration in getting sent to a mental institution is that if you have good health insurance. Somebody has to pay for your stay. If you don't have insurance or if it is a co-pay kind of HMO or PPO, it isn't likely they will admit you.

When you get to the point where you are afraid that you will harm yourself or someone else you need to go to the emergency room (this works in some situations) or go directly to the psychiatric hospital. At either place you will be assessed. If someone is at that point it's not worth the risk to wait.

Their disorder is preventing them from being basically 'functional' in life. That is to say they are unable to take care of their daily responsibilities because of their illness. If it's depression then it's probably pretty severe depression.

Normally, it's when someone has attempted suicide more than once, or if someone suffers extreme delusions and makes it physically unsafe for them to be with the rest of society.

If a person becomes a danger to him/herself or others, that would qualify being admitted.
