That depends on the PS3 you buy. The first PS3s sold in Japan and USA had the old PS2 chips built in and were fully compatible.

After that, Sony decided to take the chips out as a cost reduction and to emulate the PS2 in software (like the Xbox 360 does with old Xbox games).
This lead to some games not working correctly or not working at all.

Now the new 40 GB model has no PS2 compatibility at all. So no PS2 game will work on this console.

PS2 games on NTSC 60GB and 20GB (US and Japan) work great due to Emotion Engine chip in those versions. 80GB (both PAL and NTSC) - runs software emulation - result isn't that great, but around 80% of old games will run. 60GB PAL (Europe) runs on software emulation too.
40GB doesn't work with PS2 games at all, only PS1 games.

Although it is supposed to play PS2 games, they are having problems with it.

theoretically, when the new PS3 80GB comes out, that should clear up the problems

(You should have bought a Wii.)
