One view is that dreams are constructed of fragments of the waking world, caught in the mind, and reappearing in indefinite patterns in dreams. An opposing view is that dreams are actually real experiences in other dimensions of reality and millions or more dimensions of reality actually exist simultaneously with this current waking reality. In dreams, time and space are altered in perceptions, therefore, being in those states of reality are possible.

A dream is a story you tell yourself, about yourself. We collect an enormous amount of information during the day, and our waking lives are too distracting to deal with it all. In the sleep state, we can examine this information, at a time when we are restful and undistubed. In some dreams, you examine the events of the day, and file them away for future reference. In some, you may find spiritual revelations. In some dreams, you need to blow off stress, and do so entertaining yourself in creative, non-sensical images. In some dreams, you are able to pick up a problem your waking life is distracting you from, and examine it more closely. Dreams speak in a unique language, which is a form of short hand, the symbols in dreams represent concepts, and puns, they are presented the way they are so you will remember them on awakening, and have a chance to examine them later. Just as gr8 represents "great" or r u there represents "are you there?" dream symbols present a great deal of information in a smaller space of time than verbal ruminations would take. Some interpret only the symbols, while others interpret the entire dream as a whole story. Some think that dreams mean nothing at all, and are just random neurons firing images on to your retina. Some consider all dreams to be messages from God. They are all of the above, and then some.

Physiologically, dreams are the way the brain stays active when we sleep. It creates it own stimulus. According to this school of thought, they mean nothing.
Psychologically, dreams are telling us something. Helping us process events in our day or our lives.
Spiritually, dreams help us communicate on another level of existence.
There is lucid dreaming, where you can change the dream, or start where you left off. Out of body experience, where you leave your body and travel, with no earthly constraints.
There are many theories, all fascinating, but I don't think anyone knows for sure. It may be that the different theories are true for some people and another theory is true for other people.
Personally, I think everyone has the capacity for all of the above, maybe not the ability, but the capacity.
Peace.
