Some people will tell you to avoid any ingredients that you can't pronounce. This isn't always true; carageenan, for instance, is derived from seaweed and is not that unhealthy. You need to research an ingredient before you avoid it at all costs.

Some ingredients to start with are any thing that says "hydrogenated" (like partially hydrogenated soybean oil), high fructose corn syrup, and MSG.

Instead of looking for a healthy brand, you should look for a healthy food. A lot of "healthy" brands aren't all that great. Healthy choice, for instance, has a lot of sodium. You should be looking at healthy alternative foods. Instead of mayonnaise, use mustard. Use whole grains instead of refined white grains. Most importantly, make as much from scratch as you can, because the more processed your food is, the more unhealthy it is.

It all depends on your body size at the moment, but if you are at a good weight for your height then the following are desirable, typically over or under consumed in poorer diets.

Low Saturated FAT
Low Carbohydrates
High Protein
High Fibre

Fat in general. Especially trans fats and saturated fats. Anything cream based is a bad idea.
