When their kids are caught doing something wrong instead of blaming their own lack of parenting skills. There was a 13 year-old in Seattle that was shot in the leg by a police officer because he was not listening and instead of showing his hands like asked he was reaching for something in his pocket. It happened to be a cell phone, but how was the cop supposed to know that. Why is a 13 and 14 year-old out at 3am anyway. Where were their parents? His dad of course said "He was complying with the cop". What a crock! If he was complying he would not have been shot! Parents need to be parents and teach them right from wrong and not let them run wild at all hours of the night. It is not the police department's job to keep track of your kids!

He WAS breaking the law. He and his friend were vandelizing a building, but the point is that he WAS reaching for something in his pocket, which could have been a weapon of some kind.

It is for everyone to worry about. These kids are given free reign. Why should we be subjected to their lack of parenting? Their kids are breaking the law, making taxpayer pay out even more money to support these brats!

If that was my son, as soon as he healed from the gunshot his but would be shipped off the military school. Of course I am raising my son to have respect for the police, unlike some parents.

I think she knew that he was a minor so she did not want to shoot to kill. She jsut wanted to stop him from possibly pulling out a weapon. I also want to add that the other kid WAS complying with her. He already had his hands up, but his friend was not and he paid for it.

I agree. they shouldnt blame the cops because the kid reached for his pocket. it was 3am and it was dark.the officer didnt know what he could be reaching for could be a knife or a gun. i think that she shot him in the leg because she might have thought that it would stop him from reaching for his pocket. it is not always the cops fault and it is not children fault sometimes. he was vandilized a building and that is a crime.

As someone married to a police officer, I can say that this case has been suspicious from the start because police officers are trained to shoot for center mass. That is the center of the most mass they can see at that time. If nothing was obstructing the 13 year old's upper body, then WHY would a police officer even aim for the leg? The boy in question should actually be dead right now if the police officer followed procedure and training.
I think the public has the right to question ANYTIME the police discharges their weapons in public because the police are not always justified in doing so. The parents, in this specific case, should be grateful that they did not have to bury their child because that very well could have happened.
Peace,
Jenn

In that situation, the cop had every right under the law to shoot to wound, but not kill of course. What if the child had pulled out a gun? Not all children are the innocent. Unfortunately, the child did not realize how serious the situation was and didn't know what was going to happen when innocently reaching for his phone. I heard of a story that happened in New York... an innocent man was shot and killed by police, because he failed to comply with their orders... come to find out, he was deaf and didn't know what they were saying.

It's easier to blame someone else that yourself. When it comes to some people as long as their kids are gone and out of their hair they are happy. But let one of them get in trouble blame everyone else but the themselve. There are WAY too many people that should not have kids. Cops get such a bad rap because of people like that. Behave yourself, stay clean, watch your own kids and the cops will have no reason to visit you. If you can't behave in a legal manner then more power to the police. Cops would not have to taser people or shoot if people would shut up and listen. Follow directions and 5 minutes later you can be on your way.

you see it this way, because he wasnt your son. but if he was your child and got shot on the leg, you too would be mad at the cops, or would you really say ohh its my fought my son got shot, and would you tell your son it was his fought for reaching in his pocket. its easier said thin done. just take care of your kids and stop worryin about other peoples kids.
