I have looked into the peace corps. You have to have some kind of specific skill that can be used in the field, such as engineering, teaching, etc.

Americorps is a good program. It is essentially an internship program for non-profits in America that is partially paid for by the government. There's a lot of paperwork involved in getting hired, but it is also useful because they pay part of your student loans.

Good luck.

"Safe militarily." Sorry...I have to laugh that one off first in regard to Black Sheep's comment. What a great time to say something like that, I'm sure the patients in Walter Reid Hospital will agree with that.

Anyway, I'm a Veteran and I am also a Peace Corps nominee expecting to leave soon. Both forms of service are great...and there are plenty of benefits to the Peace Corps...especially in today's globalized economy. Employers are increasingly wanting people from diverse backgrounds, and one of the best ways of gaining this benefit is through the Peace Corps.

Military service is very honorable and I would recommend it to anyone. However, my biggest critique of the military is that despite the large amounts of travel, there are few opportunities of actually being able to get to know the people due to security threats and strict limitations. In Peace Corps, you not only travel and live somewhere, but you also know the native people of the community by living and working with them on a day to day basis.

I'm a returned Peace Corps volunteer so you can ask me any questions you may have about the whole experience. Hopefully you don't pay too much attention to Black Sheep's rather skewed view on the Peace Corps. There are lots of benefits and he's crazy if he thinks that it does nothing for your resume. Peace Corps was the most incredible experience of my life and I'd do it again in a hearbeat. You can email me anytime you want and I'll answer your questions in detail.

America Corps is in the United States. You sign up for a years service and are paid for your work (but at a low wage). Usually you are in an area that needs people to work with the disadvantaged or to do something good for a community. If you are a college graduate you can do the same thing under their Vista program. It is wonderful experience and looks great on a resume. The Vista program not only offers pay but also money toward paying off your student loans. Both programs offer health insurance.

I was in Tanzania 2005-2007...it was amazing. But every single person has a different experience. Even within our group, some were in remote villages, some in big cities. That said, it was still the most wonderful thing I've done. I wouldn't trade it for the world- and the only way to know is to try.

Unless you are planning on going into Politics...what good would it do you? You need all kinds of immunizations and may come home with something that will affects your health for the rest of you life. Join the reserves, the medical unit, if you wish to spend time in third world countries...you will get paid, be medically cared for, be in a safe enviroment militarily, get a good retirement check out of it, have served your country, be eligible for a VA home loan when you need it. Good deeds like the Peace Corp and great in attitude development but low on tangible benefits or do anything to enhance your Resume.

I haven't, but i'm reading an interesting book called 'The Road to Hell' by Michael Maren. He says quite a lot about the Peace Corps in his book. I'm sure it's available in the library.

I was a volunteer 35 years ago. My daughter is one today.

I too would be happy to answer specific questions. I wrote about my experience:

You do need a skill that a host country has asked for, and 90%+ of all volunteers have a college degree.
