It totally caught me off guard that I was asked. It's a total honor, but the thing that worries me is that I am afraid that I will not be all they think I can be for their organization.

I know I could do it, but I am just so nervous and do not want to fail.

Its me holding me back.

What would you do if you were in my position?

Please be kind. I only want the best for this group.

Btw, what I am thinking of doing is telling them I will still volunteer with the organization and am honored that they would want me in such a position, but for now I cannot.

Take them up on the offer!!!!
If they offered it- it means that the current board has taken the time to sit down and discuss whether your addition to the organization will be of benefit. That they decided yes means you shouldn't be worried about whether or not you can contribute more.
The board is simply looking for you insight and input, so go for it.
I was asked to join a non-profit board while I was still in high school. I worked on the board for 5 years and it was such a great experience. I got to sit alongside community leaders and businessmen who all valued my opinion. It's going to take you a little while to get used to it- but it's well worth the time and effort.
Don't pass this opportunity up.

You obviously have a certian perpestive on life that is different and that makes you you so I would definitely take it and see where it leads. This maybe your calling. I currently volunteer at my local hospital and I enjoy it very much. We don't have a board but we do all make suggestions that can improve things. And please remember you can't fell, volunteers are giving from the heart, you are a winner either way, and so are the ones you are helping. Without you, they maynot get the best they deserve, a diverse group always sees things differently so join in, and God Bless!!
