some people call all martial arts karate or kung fu. i guess techincally there are many styles of karate and kung fu are chinese martial arts so they are pretty general terms but its still not used properly.
when you have specific terms used in a hobby/job whatever people who do not do those activities tend to use words incorrectly. example: when a regular people refers to nitrous oxide as NOS however a person who actually races knows that NOS is a brand of nitrous oxide. example2: when people refer to mixed martial arts as UFC, once again UFC is an organization that promotes mixed martial arts, its not the fighting style itself.
all those old martial arts movies with the forms and the karate kid wax off wax on makes people want to imitate those movements. also many styles of martial arts have stances they hold which makes them get made fun of even more. heck i even joke around doing poses with my friends
most people who dont know how to fight who havent trained to be able to fight, wants to fight. to prove their skills. they also lack self discipline. back in the day pretty much only western boxers were "real fighters" and martial arts was nothing. people who almost laugh when they found out i was in muay thai because "real" fighters dont kick and if you do kickboxing you dont know how to punch at all the only thing you do is kick. thankfully mma came around and now people are kinda starting to appreciate different martial arts, but their is still some taekwondo, aikido, karate, kung fu bashing even among martial artist

Most in the general public use karate as a generic term for any Asian martial art that used punches and kicks. They don't know the differences between martial arts and they probably don't care. Since my style is not well known, I just tell people I do "martial arts." If they are interested, I will expain the specific style.
I've won many sparring matches with a straight right or overhand punch up the middle. As long as you set it up it can be very effective!

Not all of us do. Mostly grapplers will do it because of friction purposes, and because it could get pulled out which would suck. Most stand up martial artists I know don't just because we don't care. I don't think that's true about the gi either, not for me anyway (and I use a VERY heavy cotton gi). In terms of TV it'll be just so it looks like a model.

Firstly, most people will guess "karate" when you tell them that you are a martial artist because non-martial artists are not necessarily aware of the plethora of styles that exist in the arts, so "karate" is what they've heard of, and what they will guess.
Second, since a lot of people who didn't watch "kung-fu" movies from China were introduced to martial arts through the classic, KARATE KID, they all have seen that scene, and love to mimic it, given the slightest opportunity.
Lastly, since a lot of "black-belts" have gotten their asses kicked in street fights, there will be some people who will doubt that whatever belt you have, is any good. Thus, the scepticism.
THAT'S why.

Patience is a virtue, and most have lost their virtue long ago...
Seriously, understand that unless one is steeped within a certain subject enough to know better, someone won't know better! "Karate" is a broad term that, like others have said, people recognize easily. If I were you, I'd ask myself why am I telling these people that I do martial arts? Or better yet, rather than state that you do martial arts, state that you practice TKD and Aikido.
When an outsider overhears a conversation I am having with a student/co-worker at work and asks what type of "Karate" I do, I smile and say I do "Bok Choy", something you can find in your local grocery store's produce department!
If you feel initiated, educate them so they don't repeat the mistake. If you're like I am and don't feel like putting forth the effort into somebody who likely won't appreciate it, ignore him/her and change the subject.
No worries.

How about when someone answers a "WutS thA deDliEst MaRtiaL arT?" thread with the name of an actual martial art, or "BJJ/Muay Thai"?
Or people on here who've never taken martial arts but just watch UFC and think that thats enough knowledge base to answer a question?

Sorry to hear that. Most do lump all martial arts into "karate." I am amazed that people do not know that karate is just one form! I do Mui Tai myself and I sigh every time I hear, " so you know some karate huh?" At times I just want to go..." NO NO NO!!! I do MUI TAI not KARATE!!!" I usually just maintain my patience and explain the differences. Do not lose your cool! It really is common not to know the many styles. I myself am no expert but I still get confused between certain Tae Kwon Do moves and Aikido moves myself ( sorry about that! )
