1. While some breeds are more likely to be better with kids (such as Labs as just one example), all dogs are individuals. Their personalities vary. No matter how much anyone wants to tell you otherwise, there is no such thing as a breed that is always good with kids. You should do a temperament test (or hire someone who can do it) at about 7-8 weeks. The Volhard is a very common one that is widely accepted. It will give you an idea of if your puppy's tendency is to try and dominant, if the dog snaps at pain (for instance, if a young kid accidently steps on a tail or pulls on an ear). The idea that some breeds are great with kids and others not ignores the reality that any dog is an individual and there are plenty of mixed breeds out there that are great with kids or families. Finally, even the perfect dog can end up being terrible with kids if they don't know how to act around it.
2. Don't get a dog from a petstore. They usually come from puppy mills (which mean poor genes and poor socialization). At a time when it was critical to be around other dogs and being socialized, it spent it's time in a class cage with little stimulation or no playmates. That's how you produce a neurotic dog or one that doesn't know how to play appropriately (ie: that means it might bite and think it's just playing).
3. All dogs shed. And all dogs produce dander (ie: dead skin that flakes off). Dogs with long hair appear to shed more (because the hair is longer). Dogs with double coats (designed for winter) shed more (because of both the double coats plus the seasons).
4. Dogs that do best with kids are more likely to be:
--those whose temperament tests indicate a socialable, tolerant dog who isn't dominant, doesn't snap at pain and isn't intimidated.
--a dog who in the first 8 weeks was well socialized in the litter and then exposed to lots of children in a safe setting.

Angie B has it. The APBT, I have two, is the greatest family dog there is. They love everyone and are great with kids. That is why they are called "The Nanny Dog". They are short haired and do not shed a lot, but all dogs shed. My house is full of black hair from my Chi/Rat Terrier who sheds so much I don't know why he isn't bald.
If you want a smaller dog that does not shed a lot and is great with kids and everyone, go for a Beagle. Great lovable little clown. Snoopy, my pup, with the big brown eyes and long ears I call him "Sad Sack". He is the most laid back of my four dogs. He is the last one to bark at any noise. But when he gets into it his hound bay is something you notice.

My grandparents have a bischon ( not sure on the spelling )and she is a real sweet dog. She has always been good around my kids and that is the only breed of dog that I have heard that does not shed.
Keep in mind that almost all dogs shed, there isn't too many ways around that. But short hair dogs hair will be less noticable than a dog with long hair or longer hair.

All dogs do shed some. But if i were in your position i would definitally go with a Boston Terrier. They are great family dogs that will crack you up! They really have a sense of humor. They are fairly small so easy to travel with, but not so small that you're scared that you'll step on them.
Most boston terriers LOVE children, of course all individual dogs are different so you must meet them first. Boston Terriers will not run after a scent which is a problem with some dogs. My neighbor was taking her child and beagle for a walk and of course the child really wanted to walk him so the mom let her. The beagle saw something and took after it, yanking the child down and pulling the child a short ways, causing the child to get lots of scrapes. Boston Terriers would not do that.
They are easy to teach tricks for they will do anything for a treat! :) Kids love em, and they love kids. They do not have an aggressive bone in their body. I walk my Boston Terrier (BT) to the elementary school bus stop and he does nothing (not even look at the kid) if they pull his tail or poke his eye.
If you want a dog that sleeps all day this is not the one for you. They do like to play or go on walks. They will play as long as you will, but when you are done, they will stop. They won't become destructive if you don't excercise them enough like some breeds will.
You don't have to groom or brush them. Just an occasional bath, and they live for a fairly long time.
You will fall in love!

dogs good with kids and dont shed much are :
border terrier
airedale terrier
basenji
mi ki
schnoodle
Beagles are great, extremely loyal, they don't shed much and are the most loving dogs out there. TOTALLY cute too. :)
Soft coated wheaten terrier. They don't shed at all (and people who have dog dander allergies aren't allergic to them), they're about 40 pounds, very loving and loyal, and very cute.
I suggest a miniature poodle or a bichon frise if you want a fluffy dog that doesn't shed, is great with people who have allergies, and are very alert and loyal. You should get your dog from a breeder by looking in your local newspaper ads. They're healthier than from a pet store. (Check if the nose is wet. If it's dry, the dog is sick.)

Standard Poodle.
Non-shedding, medium/large in size, friendly, active, energetic, affectionate, sociable and they are one of the easiest to train and smartest dogs.
Cocker Spaniels are temperamental and snappy. They must NOT be trusted around any children.
Small dogs like Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Bichon Frise etc. are NOT good with kids. SMALL DOGS ARE **NEVER** GOOD WITH KIDS!
There is NO SUCH THING as a "Schnoodle". They are mutts. Mixed breeds. **NOT** real breeds! They are fancy designer dogs that are unhealthy and bred by morons with nothing else on their mind than DOLLAR SIGNS.

I know im probably going to get thumbs down for saying this but I used to breed APBT'S (American Pitt Bull Terrier's).I was terrified of them at first but they were the most family oriented dogs and very protective of the family. They would play fine with other dogs, they barely shed(i love their coat). The kids (4 yr old ,2 yr old and new born and all the neighbor's kids)played with them. The little ones sat on them pulled their ears and just drove the dogss nuts. not once did they ever growl, bite or anything.Just sat or layed there and kissed them. The dogs ranged from new born to 5 years old.
