if the mother is with them, you can leave them alone, otherwise they require special attention and frequent feedings. As far as the cord, the mother will take care of that or if you are really worried about it, take it to the vet and they can properly suture and remove it!

I NEVER leave pups home alone until at least 2 weeks. Even with a pigrail, mom can lie on a pup and accidentally kill it.... or a pup could get stuck under the blankets and be unable to get back to mom to nurse (8 hours without nursing could kill a newborn pup... and would, at the very least, weaken it seriously)
Sure, if the pups are not that important to you, and you don't mind dealing with a little dead body or two of a pup that didn't need to die, then leave her alone. Personally, my family and I work our schedule around so that all the pups remain safe.
Perhaps those of you who have litters of 3 and 4 don't have issues.. but with 8-12 pups a litter and a 95 lb mother, she cannot keep track of them and the likelihood is one of the pups will be hurt.

Come on --- admit it --- you don't really want to go to work do you ha ha ha? Be honest now? You'd rather sit at home all day and watch those beautiful puppies with their mum? So would i ha ha ha ha!!! Why would anyone want to miss that experience? F**k it - phone in and say you have a virus and have the runs, they won't WANT you in then so you'll have the perfect excuse to sit and watch those little 'uns!!! On a more sedate note - - - they'll be fine without you, as long as mum's there! Didn't want to hear that did you ha ha? She'll cope just fine on her own, as long as she's been fed and has a bowl of water there, not near the pups mind! That umbilical cord will dry out and drop off or mum will get round to biting it off -- she's either been busy or is leaving it there for a reason ( perhaps its a difficult one and not ready to come off ) but either way, leave her to deal with it! The only thing you need to worry about is how long this ' virus ' is gonna take to clear up ha ha ha.

I'm so with Animal_Artworks on this one. The answer is NO!
Mom can smother a pup in minutes, try to move the pups into a dangerous area. you have to watch the mom and pups. who going to be there to feed and water mom? to let her out to go potty? To make sure all the pups are feeding properly and are kept close to mom for warmth?
No you cant just leave and expect ever thing to be fine when you return home. You could come home to dead pups, a sick mom. Is that what you want?

You should tie a piece of threat or floss around the umbilical cord and cut it off.. Not too short, but not so long that she is going to chew at and but it.. You should stay home and keep an eye on the puppies. She could lay on them and kill them. You brought life into the world it's your responsibility to keep it alive and safe.

as long as the mom is with the pups they should be well cared for. she is trying to nip the cord off, just becarefull she doesn't bite it to close or the pup will bleed a lot. this happened to one of my pups when the mom bite it to close and i had to apply pressure on for a long time to stiffle the blood flow. he was ok after a while.keep the pups in a room where the mom can get to them easily and the babies won't wiggle away to far from the nursing area. nature will take its course so go to work and if you worried maybe have someone come and check them for you. good luck.

I NEVER leave pups alone for at least the first two weeks. When something goes wrong, it can happen very quickly, you need to be there to help.

Yes, for now mama dog will take care of the babies. Check them daily to make sure they are eating, look strong, nurse well, are gaining weight. If one starts to get weak, it needs to see the vet. The "string" you see is indeed the umbilical cord. It will drop off soon. Congrats on the new babies.
