Red pepper flakes! You can also try diced green chili's and a couple of jalepenos for some kick. Also, consider sliced green olives or bacon.

I actually like scallions better than onions - nicer, more mellow flavor. I also like to use parsley.
I still like them to taste like a hush puppy so I stay away from the stronger spices.
