I think it's short for "God speed you". That meant "God help you get to where you're going in a hurry."

The phrase is mentioned twice in scripture and it comes from the Greeek "chairo" meaning:

1) to rejoice, be glad

2) to rejoice exceedingly

3) to be well, thrive

4) in salutations, hail!

5) at the beginning of letters: to give one greeting, salute

Here are the verses:

2Jo 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed:

2Jo 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

It's a reference to Hermes, the messenger god with winged shoes. He went fast.
