In the 1870s Frank J. Sprague, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, invented a large-scale synchronous industrial DC motor, although it is also creditied to Zenobe Gramme..
In 1888 Nicolai Tesla invented the AC induction motor.

Nicolas Tesla invented the electric motor - he would up selling the patents to George Westinghouse for a pittance... He also selected 60 Hz as the standard for the US grid frequency...
