Anytime there is a change in litter box behavior, such as not using it and going somewhere else, you should visit the vet to check for a urinary tract infection. You cat may associate the box with pain, so he is going elsewhere.

Be sure to clean every place your cat pees with a good enzyme cleaner (make sure it is for cats, and not just "pets") such as Simple Solution or Natures Miracle, or your cat will keep going in this spots.

Quick fix to save the bed--buy a cheap shower curtain and use it over the bed when you're not in it. Also get a plastic sheet to go between the bottom sheet and the mattress to avoid any urine soaking into the actual mattress.

Causes.....can be anything from using a fabric softener on the quilt that has a perfume that smells like urine to the cat, a bedquilt that's been unwashed for several weeks and has picked up enough facial oil off us to seem 'dirty', to the cat sitting there with stuff stuck to it's butt from a previous bathroom trip and now seems to indicate that this is the spot to use because it already smells like a cat box, to a urinary infection in the cat. Or one of a hundred other reasons.

It could be a number of things. First and foremost, you have to make sure there's no medical cause. If there is and you don't know about it, nothing you do will help. Cats with urinary tract infections are notorious for peeing on soft things.

Are there other cats in the house? If so, you need more than one litterbox to keep them happy territory-wise. I've seen younger cats get scared out of the litterbox by the older, more agressive cat.

If they're not "fixed," this may be a big help. They really calm down a lot after the operation.

Is the litter dirty? A lot of times, cats won't use really dirty litter. Just make sure to clean it once a day or so.

If you've made sure none of these things are the problem, there is a product called Cat Attract cat litter that is guaranteed to help out. My dad used it for his older cat and he said it helped to some extent. http://www.preciouscat.com/
