World War I did a number on the 1918 race, and World War II did the same in 1942 and 1944. I would think other races were cancelled in the early 1940's for the same reason.

Explain I will as my family lives in Indianapolis!! I used to also but wasnt living back then. I was due to the World Wars 1 & 2. Now the explanation Rationing!!!!. There wasnt enough Gas to go around or rubber for tires!!! America had rationing programs for the whole country Food-Gas- and You couldnt even buy a set of tires unless you were in the Government or worked for a Defense plant. Consumers like my dad had to patch tire after tire or find a used one at a junkyard!!! The gas and rubber went into the Defense of our country over seas--Automobile production shut down from Mid 1942 till 1946. You coulnt even buy a car as the Auto Plants were converted over to The Defense department making planes-tanks-jeeps-troop carriers--Artillery shells and so forth. My dad lived in Indianapolis from 1940 till his death in 1994. He was born in 1913

I'm not sure, but i'm guessing it had something to do with World War I and World War II. Resources such as rubber and gasoline were needed for the war effort. WWI ended in 1918, and WWII lasted from 1939 until 1945.

World Wars I and II were going on, but that wasn't enough alone to cancel the races, the reason they weren't held is because the race track was being used a military runway.
