Do you have to take out taxes if you hire someone for personal work, such as mowing your lawn or cleaning your home, if you are paying them straight out of your pocket? If anyone could answer and possibly give a few references(preferably websites or books) it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nanny Tax: This would be a household employee. You would have to withhold Social Security and Medicare if that person earned $1,500 in a year.

check on IRS website: www.irs.gov, there is a publication 17 and other publications that will give you the answer to all your tax questions.
