Actually, it also depends on the wattage of the microwave. If it is a 1,000 watt microwave, and the potatoe is average size, it will take about 5 minutes. The more potatoes you put in, the longer it will take. Also, don't forget to poke a few holes in it with a fork before cooking it, as this allows the steam to escape so that it doesn't explode in your oven.
Red potatoes will take slightly less time to cook than whites or russets.
Good luck to you.

Are you talking about baked potatoes? On my old microwave, it was 8 minutes. On my new one, it is 4 minutes. It varies based on the power of the microwave itself. Your best bet is to find a "baked potato" button on the microwave (almost all new ones have them), and then poke at it to make sure it's fully cooked.

Don't forget to poke fork holes in it before cooking!

If you're cooking it like a baked potato typically between 15 and 20 minutes ( i usually cook 3-4 at a time). If you're just reheating it... it depends on how much there is and what kind of dish it's in. I just keep warming it up until the middle is hot.

If it's a 'Russet' potato, (the larger brown ones) POKE HOLES IN IT first (use a fork or knife) and then set it on 'high' for 8 minutes ... then 'poke it' with a fork, and if it needs more cooking, go in '2 minute' sections until it's done. MOST Russets take only 8 minutes, though ... reds, yellows, and 'blue' potatoes take about 4 minutes if 'tiny' but about 6 minutes if 'large.'

Have you seen the plastic wrapped baking potatoes at the supermarket??? They are GREAT. The cooking time is on the wrap. You leave the wrap on the potato. They cook to perfection. I now wrap my own. If you do this, be sure to buy the microwave plastic wrap. :o)

3-6 minutes depending on size of potato and strentgh of microwave.

Remember to poke holes on your potato with a fork so that it will cook more evenly.

About eight or nine minutes, assuming they are medium-sized. I cook mine for about half the time in the microwave before placing them in the oven to finish. Don't forget to pierce them with a fork to let out steam.

depends on the size of the potato and the wattage of the microwave. try 6 min., and go from there. they're done when you can squeeze them, and they give. also, in a 425 deg oven, about 60 min. gives a nice crispy skin.
