The fact that America today is becoming more and more atheistic and hedonistic reflects the religious divisions that started in the 1500s, i.e. the Protestant Reformation. The doctrine that everyone can decide for himself what to believe, led to the so-called "Enlightenment" philosophy, which was the foundation of the thinking of the American Founding Fathers. What we see today is the logical result of that philosophy. Since man is a fallen race, when you let him be the judge of true and false, right and wrong, he will of course take the wide, smooth path rather than the straight and narrow.

This is the period of time when the power of the Papacy (Pope) was waning and the power of the monarchs was growing. No longer was Europe and it's kings being manipulated by the Vatican. This is the time when Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his wife because she had not given him a son, but the Pope refused. In an unprecedented act, Henry broke from the Vatican and formed the Church of England (Anglicans), ending Vatican control over England. This act began the transition to state power instead of religious power and was one of the most important events that led to modern, secular Europe. This is only a very small piece of the puzzle, but hopefully it will steer you in the right direction.

It doesn't. Communism sorted that out quite nicely, then the Nazis, and then the Communists came back and finished it off. Mostly if not completely secular these days.

well, are they religious like they were in the 1500's, definitely not. the Catholic religion ruled society back then.
Today, all the countries are secular, meaning they are not religious socieities and religion is on the decrease.
The influences, though, of Islam and Christianity are all around, by the laws we have on the books, to the historical sites, churches, mosques, art, and even philsophy.
So we still are influenced but we are not necessarily dictated to like they were back then.
