Are there any effective ways to get rid of head lice without getting the store bought stuff? Like some home remedies? I know I should just buy the stuff, but until then, is there anything else?

I know exactly what you are going through and the people here answering obviously, do not. When my gorgeous niece came home with a dose of head lice from school, we were all quietly horrified, to say the least. I think we did quite well to contain how we felt, but in our own way we never really expected or were prepared for how much it was going to affect all of our lives.

The ONLY safe way to get rid of head lice permanently is to use a totally natural alternative to the chemical preparations then use prevention methods such as hairspray and tea tree mixed with water in a spray bottle every day to ensure they never return.

You are right to want to stay away from chemical head lice treatments. Before you listen to anyone advising you to use a pesticide treatment please consider the following:

No chemical head lice treatment is legally allowed to be labeled as 'safe' as every insecticide is a poison.

Lindane for example is a known carcinogen and is now banned in 52 different countries. Yet it is still used in more than 6 million prescriptions in the US. Google 'Jesse's Story Head Lice' for more. All lice killing pesticides are a poison and have the potential to cause serious damage, even if used as directed.

If a lice treatment does not work once it is not going to work twice, in fact the lice that live will breed into a whole new batch that are resistant to that chemical.

Read these articles and try to find a natural remedy containing Neem oil as this renders the lice unable to breed therefore making it impossible for them to build up a resistance.

Good luck, we've been there.

Oh ain't they f*****s? wet your hair with warm water ( no point in red hot water - it'll hurt your head and some of 'em will still survive!!!) Once its wet, put loads of conditioner in it and comb it through and leave it for as long as you can, lice cannot hold onto slippery hair and will die if they fall off! Another tip is to put the conditioner on your hair, wash it out after about two hours them soak your hair in vinegar! Yep, you'll smell like a fish and chip shop and be billy no mates for the night ha ha but it will get rid of the little blighters! Thats not to say though that they won't come back! You've got to either treat the 'host' ( ie - your kids or your nephews and nieces or friends kids ) with a shop bought product ( they do get rid of em quick! ) or keep away from people who have nits! Hope they find another home other than your head!!! Good luck.

yes, buy the cheap hair dye. i'm not kidding. buy the same color as your hair, leave it in the time it says to and you not only get rid of the lice but you get a boost of new color too.

Use the store bought stuff. It's the very best way to go. Make sure to follow the pakcage directions to the letter. If you have any questions, ask the pharmacist.

No you should buy the store stuff.
Just make sure you wash all your blankets and pillowcases, brushes, jackets....anything else that comes in close contact with your hair. Or you could get it right back again! :-(
