One of my dogs from my breeding program has become extremely ill since Monday when the owners opened a new bag of Canidea and fed her. She has had fever, lethargic, hives, diahrrea, vomiting and will not eat.
The owner called Canidea and has learned there is a new problem. PLEASE BE AWARE!! I am sorry this is NOT a question but I feel it is urgent to get the word out anyway possible.

Well DP.. I believe the story is true. I have an owner calling me telling me her dog is on deaths door since opening a new bag of food last Monday. Canidea told her to return her bag to the store which she is not. You can say it is not true just because you don't like the site the story is posted on? How do you know? The owner of this dog AND the vets she has seen are ALL in agreement that the food is why this dog is sick. We will get to the bottom of it but in the meantime I do not think it is fair for you to post it is a lie with out facts. I am glad your dogs are not sick but face the facts.. This would not be the first time a dog became deathly ill over Candiea dog food.. LIKE IT OR NOT. I believe the warning should be taken seriously and owners on the look out for anything suspicious.. Is that so wrong? AND. If you remember.. back in March when the HUGE recall happened, it took the companies WEEKS if not MONTHS to let the public know.

I'm not sure why people feel the need to get all defensive over this food or the claim. I do not want people to get scared or dump their food or whatever and I certainly do not expect everyones dogs who eat Canidea to get sick. That is ridiculous. I don't know what is wrong with you guys that you have to assume this gal must be some kind of a liar just because anyone can post a story. For you inormation I posted to one of my Great Dane show sites and others are saying they are having some trouble too. Canidea or any other company would not make a public announcement until there were MANY complaints. Thats just the way it goes. I hope none of your dogs get ill but please... Get over it already.. Kibbles of all brands and kinds have been making dogs sick here and there through out history. Maybe the 2 of you should pick up Ann Martins book called Foods Pets Die For and then maybe you will get that is is not such a far fetched claim. And why the heck do you feel that if the story was true

that it would be posted elsewhere or that it would be backed up or confirmed somehow? How many of the 15,000 and counting dogs and cats that lost their lives from the recall in March have their stories backed up on the internet by someone you would find credible?
I don't think it is wise for anyone to easily dismiss it given the history of recalls. All I wanted to do here is give a heads up so that if someones dog became ill suddenly they would 'think' about the food as a possible cultprit unlike the owners of my pup who are fighting for her life tonight because a vet told them to go ahead and continue her normal diet with out so much as a thought. Much like what you are doing here.. My dogs arent sick so it must be a lie... could prove to be a pretty deadly message to spread as well. I personally do not think it is a coincidence that my owners dog is on deaths door after opening a new bag on Monday and the dates would coincide with the story on consumeraffairs. I feed raw so I

don't have to think much about feeding hidden poison to my dogs. I have no agenda. Just a very sick 1 yr old dog whose family is being devastated tonight and I felt it was appropriate to give a heads up. I personally do not care who believes what. I just want the pup to live and make it through this and I believe as the owners and vets do.. it was the food that caused her illness.

I feed my diabetic, 16 year old Samoyed, my year old Yorkie boy, and my 4 year old Rottweiler Canidae dry food. I've been feeding my furkids Canidae for 7 years, and attribute much of my Samoyed's longevity to the quality of their foods.

Last month there were rumors floating around about Canidae being contaminated by acetaminophen. I contacted Canidae and received a near immediate response. It was a hoax. There are lots of hoaxes floating around.

When animals become ill, we always look for reasons and if nothing else can be tracked down, the food is blamed.

I'm not saying what your friends are experiencing isn't true. I'm just saying that as a loyal Canidae customer for 7 years, I've never had any problems.

I get my Canidae locally and always check expiration dates (yes...dog food has expiration dates). Could you post the dates from the bag or the lot number? I'd like to make sure if there is a problem, my latest bag isn't in the mix.

That's not true, anyone can post on that site.. Read the ridiculous stories.. one of them is canned food.. The first story the woman admits the Pom died of heart problems, and the dane.. He likely had the problem before, seizures..

No where else is this posted anywhere. How come if Canidae would admit there is ' Something ' there website doesn't mention it?? Just another Crap story by some jealous company, trying to get people scared.. I got dogs eating it and have for nearly a year.. Adults, puppies etc.. 6 bags of food a month.. My dogs are fine.. Everyone I know who feeds it, their dogs are fine. It's likely sick defective dogs that have problems anyhow and they are blaming it on the food..

Where else on the whole internet is this listed. Remember Consumer affair isn't an ' agency ' of sorts.. It is merely a Advertising based website that lists recalls.. Anyone can write a story there..

Edit : Then point me in the direction that proves that dogs have been sick from eating Canidae in the past.. Not some ridiculous ad based website, a legitimate news site that can back up their statements.. IT was a month ago that some other ridiculous story was posted about acetaminophen in the Canidae.. That was not true either.

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I read an article by the president of the Coton de Tulear Club of America about it. However, I can only find the article here now: http://websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53302&highlight=Canidae

ETA: Ugh! I forgot, you have to sign up to read on the forum. It's a bit long to copy/paste here, but I will copy/paste and send it in an email...if anyone wants me to? The title is "Deadly Painkiller in Dog Food" and it's by Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D., Coton de Tulear Club of America President.

ETA: I also just found this: http://www.itchmo.com/canidae-denies-pet-f...taminophen-2732

ETA: I believe a mistake is possible (it was sent in a ziploc bag), but I don't by for a minute that it's a hoax. Something to keep in mind, it's not just a woman who is saying a bag was tainted. A private lab (Expertox) had five dog food samples, out of the 100-150 they tested, test positive for acetaminophen. Of those, at least one was marked "Canidae". Canidae, apparently, denies it was their food...but felt uncomfortable enough to have samples tested.

I'm also interested in where they get their taurine, because according to that article http://websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53302&highlight=Canidae), taurine is sourced 100% in China. However, Canidae claims "All Canidae and Felidae ingredients are of U.S. origin, proudly raised and produced within the United States of America." The article also states search results came up with dozens of Chinese companies that make both pet/animal feed and acetaminophen.

The other information I'm finding on taurine says when it's listed as an actual ingredient it's (man-made) synthetic...and that almost all is manufactured and imported from China. Apparently, the same is true for some B vitamins. *If* Canidae's comes from China, they're pretty dishonest.

I am glad that you posted this for information purposes, but I agree with DP. I have several cans of canidae, and I have no fear in using it. I don't buy the dry, so I can't speak to that, but I know we have had no problems with the canned. I know this one poster you saw really does believe the food caused her problems. Hopefully she is wrong. There has been no collaboration of her theory. Anyone can post anything on the web. Not everything is correct.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I am sick of pretty much every mass produced food, but haven't had a problem with Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice so far. It is not rated as high as Canidae but my dogs are doing great on it. I have three, and keeping up with a raw diet or a home cooked diet is a bit much. If it gets to a point that my blend gets recalled, I'll just have to go with raw or home cooked again where I can be completely aware of everything that goes into the diet as far as quality and without any processing. Sorry to hear this. Thanks for telling us.

Thanx very much for the heads-up; hopefully owners who feed it will stop doing so, and people who just bought a bag will return it.

This is not answer so we'll probably both get dinged by Yahoo but still thank you. I have been feeding CANIDEA for some time now and wasn't aware of a problem. I'll look into it. again thank you for the heads up.

I'm glad people are reading this. Hopefully, this will keep people from emailing me saying I'm killing my dogs because I don't feed them Canidae.
