All modern rifles are breech loaders. This means that they are not muzzle loaders like the muskets of old. Breech loaders today are used to hunt, by the military and by sportsmen to target shoot. The .22 is the most common breech loader. It is used to target shoot, plink, dispatch small varmint (such as snakes, gophers and other pests) and take small game such as rabbits.
The center fire breech loaders are popular to hunt larger game like deer. They are called deer rifles. There are also dangerous game rifles made to hunt large, dangerous game such as water buffalo and lions. Specialized police units known as SWAT use specialized breech loaders in certain situations to neutralize dangerous suspects. These breech loaders are known as sniper rifles.

ALL modern cartridge firing rifles are breech loaders.
There are different types of breech-loading actions, ranging from full-automatic, to single-shot falling block or tip-up actions, to lever-action, to semi-automatic, to bolt-actions.
I suppose you could simplify and say that breech-loaders are used for all military uses, and most sporting uses.
