When you give to a community, you become an 'integral part' of that community ... if you then 'need something' the community is more likely to want to help you. If you were given a 'community service' sentence after a criminal conviction, it is because you may need a 'jumpstart' at becoming a better person ... but in the end, community service is BECAUSE you are a part of a community. The better life is for the WHOLE community, the better your own life will be.

It changes me from the inside, I do a lot of volunteer work, every week at the hospital and also I have been to gulf coast twice this year working on houses for people who lost theirs during Hurricane Katrina. It really lifts me up inside, I get blessed by going. It puts a smile on my face and makes me to want to help more as the opportunities arise. It just puts a little sunshine in your step.

Focuses us on someone else who is in need of help. Focusing on ourselves leads to self-centeredness, which is eating away at our society, everyone thinking its all about them.
Also, helping others less fortunate makes us more grateful for what we have.
