I believe that Barabbas was a very real man who had committed insurrection against the Roman government, and who had done murder during that insurrection. I believe that he was a sort of hero among Jews who believed that a messiah was due to arise who would defeat the Romans and bring back Israel's lost glory days, or so they imagined. They were looking for the same thing they are still looking for...a physical "messiah" who will bring peace to the earth by putting Israel in charge.
What they can't seem to get through their heads is, this didn't work for them, from the time they went to Samuel and demanded a king, rejecting God, as He told them, from being King over them. Samuel warned them what a human king would be like, and we have seen that human rulers do not bring peace to the world. The Kingdom of Israel was split within three generations, and finally destroyed by the greed and petty jealousies of their human rulers...as has every human system of government since..

Well, there are those who hold that Barabbas was converted to Christianity because he was so touched by the sacrifice of Christ dying in his place.
Whether that makes him a Saint, I do not know, but it would, if true, make him a real inspiration to those who think they cannot be saved by Christly grace.

He was good catcher before the Rangers traded him. But I wouldn't call him a saint.

Gnostic thought makes note of the fact that the name "Bar-Abbas" literally means "Son of the Father," suggesting that he was some other aspect of Jesus, not quite an "evil twin" but something like it.
