First off , the only way a remote starter would work, is if the truck starts easy without hitting the gas pedal to start. If you only have to hit the gas once to start your truck then you could wire an actuator to your linkage to give your linkage one pull upon starting.

In regards to what others have said, you will need to hook up the main wiring harness but you are going to use very few of the secondary harness.

being the age of the application there are no wiring charts available, So you'd gave to wing it.

constant power (+12V, key in any position including off)

ignition wires (+12V in run and crank position only)

accessory wire (+12V in run or on positions)

starter/crank wire (+12V only in the start position)

ground self explanatory

Secondary harness
Parking Light Output Find the wire that will show
+12V when the parking lights are ON and
ground when the lights are OFF.

BRAKE INPUT - The brake wire is located on the switch near and above the brake pedal. The correct wire will show
(+12V) on the test light only when the brake is pressed.

FACTORY ALARM SHUT DOWN WIRE not used

HOOD PIN SWITCH keeps the engine from starting or shut off the engine when the hood is opened when
remote started.

TACH INPUT (Optional)
Tactless uses voltage electronic signals and timing to work. Tach types use a signal directly from the
ignition coil.

AUXILIARY INPUT not used

Ed , Guess what, Ya got one of the easiest vehicles to put on a remote starter. Electric choke closes as soon as ya hit the key( or remote starter) and the fuel pump gets the gas up to the carb real easy cause the carb already has gas in it. I'm sure ya take care of it right? Plugs and wires, right? Starts after about 2-3 cranks and a good battery like a Delco 72 DT 78 or equal.? GO FOR IT!!!!!

Your 81 Chevy is not fuel injected, so there isn't any thing to set the choke, and there's no computer monitoring anything so how is the remote starter going to know when the motor is actually running to stop cranking the starter.

I don't think it would work at all.

Just get up earlier and start your truck.
That'll work.

Yes, these are easier to install with less trouble due to the lack of security and electronics that have to be bypassed. Just splice it into the purple wire that runs to the starter and to power and ground.

run one wire from the battery to the switch and the other from the switch to the solenoid of the starter. you can actually buy a remote starter and hard wire it if you want. good luck.
