I am an Episcopalian (Anglican, actually, but this is an American board). What do you think of the Fundamentalist movement in the United States?

It is anti-intellectual, as all fundamentalist movements are. They believe that they have The Truth, and thus they have no need to educate themselves. They think that anyone who disagrees with them is stupid, blind or evil. They hate people in the name of the Christ of love.

The Fundamentalist Movement was originally English. A group of Christians, in response to the publication of Darwin's "Origin of Species" produced a pamphlet called "The Fundamentals" declaring the inerrancy of the Bible.

It took hold here in the United States most strongly after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, and the subsequent growth of the Evangelical movement.

I wonder how it manages to maintain itself in view of all the evidence supplied by paleontology, archeology, physics and cosmology, but manage it does.

"actually, but this is an American board"

Some Americans think it is but in fact it is international with people from many different countries and cultures. My view of fundamentalists in any religion is that they are a major danger to world peace and responsible for just about all the terrorism - Muslims and so-called Christians alike.

I'm an atheist here in the states and have a good friend who is an Anglican priest.

He says he's worried America is worshiping a new god named Nationalism.
